Dark Triumph (His Fair Assassin, #2) by Robin LaFevers

Buy the book:
Amazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository

My rating: 5 stars
Book summary:
"The convent views Sybella, naturally skilled in the arts of both death and seduction, as one of their most dangerous weapons. But those assassin's skills are little comfort when the convent returns her home to the life that nearly drove her mad. And while Sybella is a weapon of justice wrought by the god of death himself, he must give her a reason to live. When she discovers an unexpected ally imprisoned in the dungeons, will a daughter of Death find something other than vengeance to live for?"

Read what Tanja thought about Dark Triumph here.

Second book in His Fair Assassin series was something I picked up to read, expecting mediocre read compared to Grave Mercy. Tanja scared me with her 3.5 rating, but I decided that I would finish this trilogy no matter what.

Dark Triumph left me speechless! I even loved it more than previous book. It is much darker and brutal - which is something I love - characters are more complex and nothing isn't how it seems. So many times you will question your own sanity because Robin LaFevers doesn't reveal everything outright. She teases you with snippets of possibilities, some of those so horrible, that you would have to take a short break just to process what you have just read.

One thing that I did not expect is that this would be a story about different set of characters set into the same fictional world. It is and is not a sequel to Grave Mercy. While you do find out what happens next, story is focused on fate of (previously) secondary characters. This reminded me a lot of Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta. Even Sybella, main female character, is so much similar to Quintana with her bloodlust and how savage she can be.

Now I am even more curious to read finial book of the series. Annith is so different from both Sybella and Ismae, which makes me wonder what will be her roll in upcoming events. I guess, we will have to wait and see.

Happy reading,

Waiting on Wednesday (#119)

You know the story. This is a meme created by Breaking the Spine and every week we pick books we're waiting for. Here are our picks for this week.

Glass can't wait to read...

"A summer road trip changes everything in this unforgettable new tale from acclaimed author Katie McGarry

For new high school graduate Echo Emerson, a summer road trip out west with her boyfriend means getting away and forgetting what makes her so... different. It means seeing cool sights while selling her art at galleries along the way. And most of all, it means almost three months alone with Noah Hutchins, the hot, smart, soul-battered guy who’s never judged her. Echo and Noah share everything — except the one thing Echo’s just not ready for.

But when the source of Echo’s constant nightmares comes back into her life, she has to make some tough decisions about what she really wants — even as foster kid Noah’s search for his last remaining relatives forces them both to confront some serious truths about life, love, and themselves.

Now, with one week left before college orientation, jobs and real life, Echo must decide if Noah's more than the bad-boy fling everyone warned her he'd be. And the last leg of an amazing road trip will turn... seriously epic."

Expected publication date: December 8th 2014

Tanja can't wait to read...

"Acclaimed author Sarah Beth Durst returns with an evocative new novel that brilliantly mixes fantasy with dark reality. In The Missing, one lost woman will confront her biggest challenge yet…

Not everyone who is lost wants to be found. Nobody knows that better than Lauren. Having ended up in the town of Lost, where the residents must discover what they're missing before they're able to leave, Lauren found her happiness. But Peter—her love—has vanished into a void.

In her quest to find him, Lauren ends up in the town of Despair. There she discovers a barren landscape of crumbling skyscrapers, darkened streets and empty playgrounds. It's a place without hope—and its desolation is spreading outside its walls.

While Lauren fights to save Lost and rescue the residents of Despair, she searches for her missing lover. For her missing faith. And for her hope that the people who are lost may still be found..."

My rating: 5 stars
Book summary:
" Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.

Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?"

Read what Tanja thought about Grave Mercy here.

Don't you love when by some weird luck you discover a book that manages to surprise you? And it is not even kind of a book you would usually read? That is exactly what happened to me - first two books of His Fair Assassin trilogy were available on NetGalley, I saw both countless times on my friend's blogs or social network's  profiles and I just couldn't miss an opportunity to read them myself.

The story. Young girl escapes from unwanted marriage just so she would become professional assassin trained by nuns. Seriously, how can you resist reading something with premise like this? It screams "girl power". But there is something that, in my opinion, skyrockets Grave Mercy into "epic-ness". Although, it is labeled as young adult, you have a feeling as if this book is "ageless". I didn't have usual issues when it comes to young adult fantasy. World building was believable which is a big deal considering that this is a historical fiction. Author herself points out that she had done extensive research and that many of characters are historical figures (including thirteen years old Anne). Fourteenth century is so different from our own time and being a child was a privilege not a basic human right and - as I used to remind my students in many occasions - back then, being teenager meant that you are adult with all responsibilities  that come with that.

Characters. Ismae, Sybella, Annith, Anne and even those who are supposedly negative characters, are the most amazing women I fantasy I have read about. Strong and opinionated, with enough strength to fight for their believes and, at the same time,  like any other human being flawed and tempered. Duval reminded me of Barrons from Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. Man who knows what he needs to do protect those he love, reluctant to let anyone in and, when he finally does, loyal and honest.

Saint Mortain. The most intriguing part of the story. I have so many things to say about this, but I won't because that would spoil Grave Mercy for you. I will just say that I was impressed how author put together ancient believes and  character development giving us convent full of nuns and young girls who serve Death.

Happy reading,

Bookish Problems #12 - Reading Lists

I believe that every bookworm at least once a week has problem called "What will I read next?" no matter that she or he has five books on nightstand, two somewhere in the kitchen, maybe even one in the bathroom. And don't even let me start with those we have on our e-readers.

How do you chose what to read next?

This is what I like to do - I make lists. A lot of them. Yes, I may have a problem, but I just love sorting trough the books I own. Sometimes I even find a book I forgot I had bought.
At the moment I have several lists, but here are the most urgent ones.

Next ARC list. As much as I love NetGalley and Edelweiss, there are days that I despise them. I click on "request" too many times and next morning I have so many new books on my Kindle, that next two years wouldn't be enough to read them all. So I made folder with advanced readers copies that will be published in next two months. When I decide that it's time to read one of the books I got, I just open thisfolder and pick something.

Next NA list. I love new adult novels and there is nothing surprising that I have this list. Older release that I plan to read or a latest Colleen Hoover novel - they are all here.

Sandra Brown / Linda Howard / Kristen Ashley list. I can never make mistake (or at least not a big one) with this three ladies. They are my safe picks that get me out even out of the worst reading slumps. And, I am completely addicted to their writing.

MC romance list. Bikers are just so.... badass! My favorite kind of antiheroes. I am anxiously waiting for the next Madeline Sheehan novel, but I will probably read Signal Bend series by Susan Fanetti before December.

Romance (adult) list. Megan Hart, Tiffany Reisz, Tarryn Fisher, Elle Aycart, Cherise Sinclair, Ella Frank... Everything from sweet love stories to erotica.

Trashy drama list. You know of those ranty reviews I post on Goodreads? Yeah... This is where they come from.

Our dear, fellow bookworms,
please share with us how do you decide what to read next.

Love,

Guest post
Leaving Olivia: Writing from Multiple Points of View
Before I started writing The PSS Chronicles, I wrote short stories. Short stories are, by definition, short, and they usually only involve one point of view. So, that's how I wrote them.
Then, I started writing GHOST HAND, a young adult paranormal thriller novel. I had no idea then if it was going to be from one point of view or many. In fact, I first wrote the book in third person, not first person. At that time, the mechanics weren't important to me. I was just getting the story out and following where it led. Yes, that means what you think it does. I don't outline or plan my novels. I'm a pantser. I pick up my laptop, open Word, and trust the story to do the rest.
When I started shopping GHOST HAND around to agents, one of them pointed out that most YA paranormal is told from first person, and since I only had one point of view, Olivia's, that should be easy for me to change to.
I'm not sure it was easy, but it did make the book markedly better and shortened it, as well as giving me a chance to do a major overhaul. It was a good change.
I've heard new writers ask, "How do you know whose point of view to write from?" For me, it wasn't really a choice. It was always Olivia's story so, of course, she told it. She did a great job telling it too, in both GHOST HAND and GHOST HOLD, the first two books of the series.
But then I ran into a problem.
At the end of GHOST HOLD, Olivia gets herself into a lot of trouble. Without spoiling too much, she gets captured by the bad guys and held prisoner. Suddenly, her point of view was extremely limited. She was separated from most of the other characters. There was no way she could tell the entire story that needed to be told in book three, GHOST HEART. I was going to have to leave Olivia and enter the head of some of the other characters to tell the tale.
That idea seemed both startling and scary and exciting. For four years I had written as Olivia. Who would I become now? Which characters would pick up the narrative, and would I be able to make them as real and believable as she was? And different. They had to be themselves. They couldn't be slightly modified versions of Olivia. That would never do. So, I'd written myself right into a new challenge, but I've always liked challenges.
The first question was, "Who do I choose? Who do I write from?"
The answer to that was easy. First, I had to choose two characters that were in key locations to tell the storylines Olivia couldn't tell. Second, I had to choose the characters whose perspective's I most wanted to live in. Immediately I knew. Passion and Marcus. It had to be them. And then I dove right in.
Overall, I found it wonderful to crawl into Passion and Marcus's skin. I learned a lot about them as characters which I think will benefit the fourth book coming out next year, GHOST HOPE. Marcus was probably the hardest because I'm not a guy and never have been. My son helped me with that one. And I came to like Marcus even more than I already did. He is a flawed character to be sure, but I understand him better now.
Yes, leaving Olivia was scary. I wasn't sure I'd like doing it, and many readers expressed the same concern.
But the feedback has been positive. The beta readers and my editors loved the multiple points of view, and I hope you will too. And never fear. There are more perspectives to come in book four. You'll see what I mean at the end of GHOST HEART.And I'm confident you'll love it.

Seventeen-year-old Olivia Black has a rare birth defect known as Psyche Sans Soma, or PSS. Instead of a right hand made of flesh and blood, she was born with a hand made of ethereal energy.

How does Olivia handle being the girl with the ghost hand? Well, she's a little bit morbid and a whole lot snarky.

Her mother thinks her obsession with death, black clothing, and the local cemetery is a bid for attention. But when Marcus, the new guy in Olivia's calculus class, stares at her like she's a freak, Olivia doesn't like it. And when her hand goes rogue, doing things she never imagined possible, Olivia finds herself running for her life with Marcus from a group of men bent on taking the power of her hand for their own nefarious purposes.

Olivia doesn't expect it to be easy, even with the PSS guys backing them up. But what she discovers over the course of the mission will call into question everything she ever believed about herself, her family, and especially about Marcus, the guy she is undoubtedly falling in love with.

ARC Review: Get Happy by Mary Amato

Buy the book at
Author's

Book summary:
In this poignant, realistic, contemporary YA by a state master list star, perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen and Gayle Forman, a young songwriter builds a substitute family with her friends in place of the broken family she grew up with.
A hip high school girl who loves music, writes songs, and is desperate for a ukelele, learns to her shock that her father did not abandon her years ago and has been trying to keep in touch. She begins to investigate him, only to discover that he has a new life with a new family, including the perfect stepdaughter, a girl who Minerva despises.
It's been a while since I have read (and loved) Guitar Notes and in the meantime a lot has changed. I became a different reader and my reading preferences have changed as well. But good thing about all this is that I can change, but my love for realistic stories and characters never will. Luckily, Mary Amato really knows how do write them.

I don't know for you but when I was a kid I really wanted to learn how to play piano (It's still something I desire to know), so to say that I understood and connected with Minerva would be an understatement. Her love for ukelele was so pure that it's hard not to cheer for her. Not only her love for music, but also her views and coming of age which was realistically portrayed. Also her understanding of the family and what values it has.

Besides Minerva, who was out main character other characters in this book were amazing. Each of them was real and what's more it was so easy to see differences between them and how despite them they could work together in "Get Happy". Another great thing is the image of parents in this story. Usually in YA books they are MIA, but here we get parents that care and protect their children, and sometimes do what they think is right without taking in consideration everything. They make mistakes, but they are humans after all.

While you'll find some topics like single parents and how hard being one sometimes is, this book is hilarious! I loved how it seemed light and easy to read, but still deep and real. Perfect for younger readers if you ask me!

Rating: 5 stars

Love and Other Unknown Variables or That Feeling When You

Laugh and Cry at the Same Time

Every once in a while you find a book that manages to surprise you. Just when you think how you've read every possible plot twist out there, bam! -  there goes your heart and soul, whisked away in that latest book you have read and that should have been called The Biggest Emotional Roller Coaster Ever.
Yes, Shannon Lee Alexander, that is the sound of my heart breaking into million pieces. And I blame you for it! You and your brilliant novel.

If you liked TFIOS, you will love this book even more.

I know I did! Unlike many other readers, I wasn't that much impressed with John Green's novel (you can read my review here). I did like a general idea of the story, there were few really awesome parts - but I could not get over his writing style.

What does this have with Love and Other Unknown Variables? First, writing is absolutely amazing. (I'm favoring female authors, so what?) It is funny and thought provoking without that nagging feeling that author is trying too hard. Story flows so naturally and  keeps you on your toes all the time. Tanja made a great list of things that LAOUV makes you do - read her review as soon as you finish with mine - you feel everything, you cry and laugh, it makes you think about everything (even some of the things that never crossed your mind before). In the end, you are so grateful for the things you have, for every person that is important in your life, you will hug your sister or brother and tell them how much you appreciate them. You will remember that teacher from high school that opened your eyes to new things or you will remember that class full of pranksters who challenged you and made you  a better teacher because, by the end of the day, we all learn from each other.

http://instagram.com/glassamra

I really need to read To Kill a Mockingbird!

I have never read a book that made me  want to read Harper Lee. I usually end up rolling my eyes and thinking: "Not again!" It would be awesome if I could find used and loved copy like the one Charlotte gave to Charlie.

In the end...

I would love to recommend Love and Other Unknown Variables to everyone. If you are fan of The Fault in Our Stars, you will love this book. If you did not like it - I am absolutely sure that Shannon Lee Alexander will win over your heart just like she did mine. Fans of sweet love stories and young adult authors like Melina Marchetta and Jandy Nelson, must read this book. And if you are math geek - well, what are you waiting for?

Happy reading,

He won't let her.

This is how silliness and foolishness grow up.

"The final chapter in the war for Ourea ends with blood.

The war she accidentally started ends with a final battle that will either save or enslave her people. She will do anything to win—until she learns the cost of victory.

But his father has already tried to kill him more than once, and it’s time to end his reign. Braeden’s armies are ready. His strategy is foolproof. His generals are waiting for the order to attack. It’s only in the final seconds before the battle begins that he realizes he missed one crucial detail—the traitor."

Bookish problems #11 - Where to order that book?

Hello ppl. Another day and surprise, surprise another bookish problems post. I'm quite sure that I lost that problems part somewhere in the process but I guess you all pretty much understand that this is basically a discussion post. I have got another discussion today and it's about book ordering.

So, when you have a resourceful friend like Zemira as your bestie, your life can be really easy. Trust me that girl really knows how to find what you need and how to find it cheap, which is how we like our books, because that usually means we can order one more. Therefore I'll now present you some sites where you can order books, and which I used. Side note I won't mention Amazon here, as really there is no need to. You know more about it then I do, anyway. Also you might notice that there is no Barnes and Noble on the list, but that's because I have never actually used it.

The Book Depository

I won't say much about this one as it's really wildly known. It's really an amazing site (it used to be more amazing but well economy is not our best friend) and what is the most amazing thing about it is that you get free worldwide shipping. Most of my books came from this site and I have never got any of my books lost or really damaged. When I said it was more amazing in the past it's because it used to be a lot cheaper. Now the problem is that pre-order discounts are low and book prices are sometimes really high. But still it offers most of the books you are looking for and it arrives at your doorstep really quick.

AwesomeBooks

Honestly, I have no idea how familiar are you with this site, but it's actually quite new site which offers you amazing prices for used or new books. They have really great discounts for used books and often you can find HCs for little over $4, and please note that most of the books are in a really good condition. Heck, my Eon seems like new without any damages or missing pages. Even the dust jacket is in prefect condition. PBs usually have that line on their spine but that's normal to appear after reading a book. This site is not without flaw however. Its flaw lays in shipping. Which is not much but still is there. But you all lucky people from the UK still have free shipping and you go and enjoy it.

BetterWorldBooks

When I said cheap in at the beginning of the post you should understand that it usually means used books. BWB is yet another amazing site which offers you both used and new books, where used books sometimes even have hilarious prices. You can find perfectly preserved books for little money. The price may vary, but you people at the USA get them really cheap. Once again use it!

Now I wonder have you ever used any of these? What are your thoughts about them? Do you have any others to share? If yes, then please do so!

Best,
*I do not owe any of the pictures and all were taken from the sites. You can find links in the site titles where are sources of the pictures.

The Scent of Legacy is a first novel in Arkona Purpur, paranormal series written by a new author, Drina Steinberg. I am especially happy to talk about this book today because she is our "neighbor", Drina is Serbian author. That is a main reason why I wish I liked The Scent of Legacy more then I did. It was a good book,  some parts I really enjoyed and others were... not so good.

  • Interesting idea. This is the first book I have read so far that is based on Slavic mythology. I don't even have to say that it's the part of the story that excited me the most considering that I am part of that (really big) group (read more about Slavs on Wikipedia). It was interesting to see how author managed to put together modern world and ancient beliefs. I've listened stories about  Rügen and last pagan Slavic temples my whole life. It was like going back to the childhood and listening my father's voice lulling me to a sleep with tales about god that sleeps and dreams about the world we live in.
  • But... For those who never before heard about Slavic mythology, it could be a little bit confusing. I know those tales and at the times I felt lost because some of the names or details were mentioned and not explained.
  • This is not YA. I do not know I thought it was. Main character, Purpur, is 39 and Lirai is even older. Yes, there are a few steamier scenes, but don't let that small detail push you away.
  • Characters? Story? I have no idea how to explain this and not spoil the story for you, but I will try. I hated and loved Purpur at the same time. At first, she won me over with how kick-ass she is, but then she turned into Bella Swan. And she is 39. If you know me and my reading preferences, you're well aware of my lack of patience for middle aged women who act like teenage girls. And there is this whole issue I had with a lack of chemistry between Lirai and Purpur. It should have been lust at first sight, but I just didn't buy it. That whole part made me so confused because everything happened fast and a lot of different characters were introduced into the story. Actually, first 30% book was confusing (and everyone using word "darling" three times on one page was a bit to much). Things did get better after that, we finally get some answers and everything starts unraveling faster. Ending kept me biting my nails and cheering for a good guys, but... I wish that few things were told differently, that timeline of the events wasn't so slow in the beginning and a little bit hectic in the end.

Final judgement?  I believe that The Scent of Legacy will find its fans among readers who love fantasy novels and who would love to read something a little bit different from their usual picks. Fantasy is not a genre that prefer and love (well, Melina Marchetta and Lumatere Chronicles are exception), so maybe that is why this book is not five star read for me. I would love to hear your thoughts about Arkona Purpur, so if you decide to read it, make sure to stop by and share your review links with us.

Happy reading,
