Dark Triumph (His Fair Assassin, #2) by Robin LaFevers

Buy the book:
Amazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository
My rating: 5 stars
Book summary:
"The convent views Sybella, naturally skilled in the arts of both death and seduction, as one of their most dangerous weapons. But those assassin's skills are little comfort when the convent returns her home to the life that nearly drove her mad. And while Sybella is a weapon of justice wrought by the god of death himself, he must give her a reason to live. When she discovers an unexpected ally imprisoned in the dungeons, will a daughter of Death find something other than vengeance to live for?"
Read what Tanja thought about Dark Triumph here.

Second book in His Fair Assassin series was something I picked up to read, expecting mediocre read compared to Grave Mercy. Tanja scared me with her 3.5 rating, but I decided that I would finish this trilogy no matter what.

Dark Triumph left me speechless! I even loved it more than previous book. It is much darker and brutal - which is something I love - characters are more complex and nothing isn't how it seems. So many times you will question your own sanity because Robin LaFevers doesn't reveal everything outright. She teases you with snippets of possibilities, some of those so horrible, that you would have to take a short break just to process what you have just read.
One thing that I did not expect is that this would be a story about different set of characters set into the same fictional world. It is and is not a sequel to Grave Mercy. While you do find out what happens next, story is focused on fate of (previously) secondary characters. This reminded me a lot of Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta. Even Sybella, main female character, is so much similar to Quintana with her bloodlust and how savage she can be.

Now I am even more curious to read finial book of the series. Annith is so different from both Sybella and Ismae, which makes me wonder what will be her roll in upcoming events. I guess, we will have to wait and see.

Happy reading,

  1. So glad you enjoyed this one too, Glass! I loved it a lot more than its predecessor, likely because it's darker, and as you said, each of these heroines are so different from one another that I'm certainly curious to read about Annith and finally get into her head as well. I wish I'd read these closer to the release of Mortal Heart--I've already forgotten so much about them!--but I can't wait till the release of the final book in this trilogy! :) Wonderful review, dear!

  2. Yay for loving this! You are going to love the last book even more. Annith and Balthazaar as amazing!

  3. AHHH! I loved this book sososososo much. It's my favorite of the three. Look forward to seeing what you think about Mortal Heart.

  4. I loved this one more that Grave Mercy, too, Glass! It took me by surprise because I wasn't totally convinced I'd fall for Beast as a love interest, but it completely worked! Wonderful review! :)

  6. Ooh, i am so glad that you loved this book! I really want to read Grave Mercy, so I will get to that one soon.

    Lovely review, Glass <33

  7. Oh, I didn't know this actually talks about other characters! That's super interesting... I wasn't really a fan of the ones in the first one, so I might pick this one up since it shows other ones. Plus, who wouldn't love dark and brutal? ;D

  8. Glad you enjoyed this more than the first, Glass! I'm actually one of the few people who liked Grave Mercy more, but I still enjoyed Sybella's story. Definitely curious about Marchetta's series now!

    Awesome review, Glass!

  9. This just goes to show that you can't always trust other reviewers, even when they are your go-to bloggy peeps. It's fantastic that LaFevers was able to exceed your expectations with this follow-up installment, I hope the final book is just as good!

  13. I liked the first book better because I couldn't stomach some of the stuff in this one, but they are both really good. Mortal Heart might be my favorite of them all. Great review! Thanks for stopping by too.

  15. super duper excited to read this when I finally get some time! I know that a lot of people loved it more than GM and looks like you did too :D I'm so happy you loved it so much, Glass! A little bummed that Tanja didn't as much, but it's ok. Ooh! I need to check out that Marchetta series, everyone keeps talking about it :)
