Book summary:
"I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me."
When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.
Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.
Another big name in our little bookish world is for sure Kami Garcia. Even though her Beautiful Creatures series wasn't something I enjoyed, still I wanted to give her books another chance especially after hearing some interesting things about this series. So when it appeared as read-now on NetGalley I said why not!

I wish I didn't, though. I'm not sure should I pull out I'm too old for this or this is not for me card or it's not only that. There is mix of that and mix of some issues I had with this book. But while this story promises you a really thrilling and dark story with some interesting background story, it gives you bits of that but not fully to be crazy about the story. It offers a really nice background story and interesting idea with that, but sadly it wasn't developed enough so I could understand it better. It will probably be in the sequel, but I'm not sure that I'll be reading it.

Now we come to the part which I had issues with - meaning the characters. Now I'm pulling my "I'm too old for this" card and I'll say that while Kennedy was your typical seventeen year old girl it's where it stops. She is not remarkable and unforgettable. Rather she is now after few weeks of reading this story just another character I will forget in few months. It's not only her but the problem here is that despite the love-triangle we had here, I believe that when you have twins as characters you need to make them unique and different enough for us to be able to distinguish between them. In theory that was done here because in descriptions boys were just that, but as soon as they started doing something they became the same. Both were bad boys but doing bad things just because they survived some traumas, which is as we all know always a good reason. Did I say typical already?

So, bottom line is that I believe that people who enjoyed Beautiful Creatures and some other similar books and younger readers who are discovering YA will enjoy this one, but we who had a decent share of typical stories not so much.

Rating: 2 stars.

Until the next time,

  1. I'm sorry this one didn't work for you! I agree that younger readers and those new to YA will probably enjoy this (and Beautiful Creatures for that matter) more. I'm hoping book two in the series will provide better development of the story. Thank you for your honest, thoughtful review!

  2. I haven't read Beautiful Creatures but I doubt very much that I'd have enjoyed it or that this is for me. Sorry to see you disliked this one so, Tanja, but I hope your next read is far better!

  3. Ah bummer this one didn't go well for you. I love the cover though!! I'm with you when it comes to twin characters in a book, there needs to be some distinguishing trait about them. Great review, Tanja! Hope your next read is more enjoyable :)

  4. Yeah I had a big problem with her first Beautiful Creatures book and I confess it's why I haven't read more so when I saw this series I passed. It seems like I did well.

  5. When I started with the Beautiful Creatures series a few years back I had enjoyed them but I just finished the last book in the series this year and it took me a long time to get to it. I have also realized that my reading tastes have changed and that the I'm too old for this card is now officially valid for some books. I'm definitely skipping this one. Thanks for your review Tanja! :)

  6. Unremarkable characters are the worst. I'm sorry this was such a disappointment for you, Tanja. I personally didn't find this or her Beautiful Creatures series that appealing which is why I never bothered to pick them up, but I can't say, I'm disappointed in any way.
    Great review!

  7. I haven't read Garcia yet, but honestly don't have a strong desire to do so. Sorry her work doesn't do it for you.

  8. Oh no! Sorry this disappointed so much. :(

  9. Urgh! I have yet to experience Kami Garcia's writing for myself, but after learning that both Beautiful Creatures AND this book were a letdown for you I think I'll pass altogether because I personally don't need another typical YA title on my to-read shelf.

  11. When I read this(about a year ago) I really enjoyed it, but now? I honestly don't remember that much about it! I Remember liking it but not much beyond that.

I do agree that the boys were way too much alike and, from what I can remember, there definitely wasn't enough story(or character) development.

Still I think I'll probably give the second a chance because I did really love this one when I first read it. =) Great review.

  12. Sorry to see this didn't work for you, Tanja, but I'm not surprised. I haven't seen any good reviews for this one. Bad enough to have a love triangle, but to have brothers as the rivals? Ugh! Great honest review! :)

  13. Blah, the MC sounds banal. What would be the point if this book left you unimpressed? Didn't enjoy Beautiful Creatures either! Great honest review, Tanja! :)

    1. I never got far with that series. Stopped after book 1 and I honestly can remember many 2 things about it. One of them that it's weird. Thanks, Lola :)

  14. I agree with your thoughts on this one Tanja, it didn't really stand out and it was WAY too similar to Supernatural for me. I just didn't get why the twins were willing to fight over the girl as well, she was nothing special. Great review!

    1. I haven't seen Supernatural but yeah many people think that. Exactly. Thanks, Jeann :)

  15. Yeah, I can understand how the character ordeal simply became harder seeing as they were twins and there needed to be some difference. I have got Beautiful Creatures out at the moment for me to read, but I doubt I will be picking this one up afterwards...
