(Bookish Problems #1) Sequels I Am Afraid to Read

We all have our problems. Some people are afraid of the dark or spiders. Kids hate this time of the year because all the tests they have to take. Others hate the rain and cold weather, my(Glass) grandfather hates it because he can't slip out of the house and away from my obsessive grandmother with excuse of working in the garden. Wife doesn't like her husbands new haircut, and husband thinks that new couch his wife had picked is ugly

We? Well, we are afraid to read sequels of my favorite series. Most of those are final books. It is obvious that we are sad because few of series have come to an end, but also we read too many bad reviews. We don't wan't to be disappointed.

Allegiant

Both Tanja and I are big fans of Veronica Roth, we loved first two books of her dystopian series. I think that Tanja even rated them higher than me.

Why do I have problem with Allegiant? I tried really hard to stay away from status updates and reviews and all the spoilers on Goodreads, but I couldn't escape the fact that most of the people are not happy with how everything ended. Is it same thing like with final book of Hunger Games? (That one was my favorite in the series.) Or is it just that bad? I remember that I had some issues with previous book, Insurgent. Tanja and I should buddy read Allegiant next month, so we will see.

Daylighters

Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine is my absolute favorite paranormal series about vampires. Daylighters is the final book and I am anxious to see what will happen with Clair, Shane, Eve, Myrnin and my Michael Glass.

I have to be honest and admit that previous book wasn't good as the rest of the series. I think that it would probably be better it ended earlier - I think it should have 12 books. I have no idea what to expect.

Requiem

I've been finding excuses to leave Requiem for later since March. I just don't want this series to end. It's bad enough that I had to say goodbye to The Infernal Devices.

I loved previous two novels, especially Pandemonium. I've heard a lot of complaints about how Lauren Oliver ended her trilogy - few of my students were really loud in expressing their disappointment and I had to shush them down before they told me all the good parts.

Goddess

Starcrossed series by Josephine Angelini was a nice surprise - I didn't expect that I would like it that much. To be completely honest, only reason I picked it up was because I got ARC of second book, Dreamless.

Helen was kick ass heroine in sequel, I loved her to pieces and I am just afraid that final book will end up with some big cliche. Did I mention love triangle? I hate them...

If I Should Die

I was so excited first time I saw Revenants trilogy by Amy Plum - I love cover of Die for Me and I remember that I couln't wait to get my hands on it. And then I did. And I hated it. I told myself that I would give up on the rest of the books, but I didn't, I couldn't resist it - I liked Until I Die.

Why am I hesitant to read If I Should Die? What if it's bad as first one? I am still not sure if I'll ever read it.

Origin

I (Tanja) actually don't have much to add to this Glass' list. Beside Allegiant that she mentioned above there are only two others that I'm scared of reading.

First one is Origin. Honestly I loved this series and it was so good at the time, but lately JLA tends to disappoint me with her both paranormal and especially contemporary books. I'm afraid that some things I didn't mind before would bother me now.

Sentinel

Origin is something that can disappoint me a lot but it cannot crash my world like this one can. Sentinel is highly expected book for me. This might not be the most original paranormal story but still it's deep in my heart. It's not a secret that Aiden is my first book boyfriend and this book being disappointment is basically unacceptable for me.

I still have high hopes that I'll enjoy this one as much as the previous ones.

That would be it. The horrible list that keeps us awake at night. Do you have sequels on your bookshelves that you are afraid to read?

Love,

  1. I do actually. I've had a finished copy since January-February of Unravel Me and I still haven't read it. I'm so afraid I'll hate it as my luck with sequels this year hasn't been stellar.

    1. You should, because that book was great! I hope you'll enjoy it :)

  2. I know what you mean! I always dread the last book in a series while simultaneously being excited for it too. Such bittersweet moments.

I will tell you that Requiem was good but the ending was open ended which bothered me a little but not enough to hate the author or book. I did love this series!!

Sentinel I read the first two chapters and then had to stop because I just wasn't read for it to be over yet.

I want to read the Divergent series, especially the first book before the movie is out because I have heard such great things about it but..I have also heard the last book blowed and that makes me sad and nervous to start it. I don't want to fall in love with the writing, world and characters and then be heartbroken at the ending!

    1. Yeah, but I love it when it's more sweet than bitter ;) I planed on reading it soon, but I'm so scared of even opening Sentinel.
We'll read it sooner or later. So yeah I know how you feel. Thanks Ali :)

  3. interesting post! I haven't been able to read many series lately because I just don't have time to keep up, so I haven't read any you listed. However, I'm a bit curious about Divergent and I've also heard people didn't love the last novel.

    1. That's the reason why we avoid reading it, but then again I'm afraid someone will spoil it for me. Damn!

      Izbriši
  4. Ha, I SO am with you! I'm terrified to read Allegiant but I need to soon before I get spoiled. Requiem was hard for me to read and I liked it a lot even though it wasn't perfect, I wasn't real disappointed.
I have SO many series books to catch up on!

    1. True that. I'm avoiding spoilers like vampires sun! :) Yeah, we all do.

      Izbriši
  5. Hahaha! Of all those things you could be afraid of, y'all are afraid of sequels. Your grandparents sound really amusing and cute, Glass. Anyhow, I heard Allegiant ends terribly (one of the reasons why I'm dying to read the series now) and I haven't read any other series from your list but I hope you two end up reading them all and getting the series over with. I can understand your hesitance but just do it, people- you're going to have to... Someday. Nice list!

  6. If I Should Die was actually pretty good, I liked the series from the start, but it's one of the few ones that got better with each new book. Also, I just finished Daylighters, and while it was fairly uneventful it at least gave me closure.

Sentinel was a real disappointment, honestly, maybe because I expected a lot. And dear God, you couldn't force me to read Allegiant, not even with a gun to my head. :)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This is a great idea.

    1. I have read your review for Sentinel and I'm really afraid of reading it. LOL But I don't want to read spoilers about Allegiant either. So yeah, I'll have to read it. Thanks Maja :)

      Izbriši
    2. Ugh, I think Rachel Caine should have finished this series a long time ago. Last few books weren't good as previous ones. But as you said, at least well get closure.

LOL, I didn't know you read Revenants series, Maja.:) It's good? Yey! I'll have to pick it up soon then.

      Izbriši
  7. Ooh yes Allegiant and Requiem were books that I've set aside multiple times because I just didn't want to tackle them (mostly because I knew spoilers in advance, or just because of angry reviews). I'm also holding off on reading Cress because I know I'm just going to be dying for the next book again. :-)

    1. I avoid both reviews and spoilers but still rating itself is enough to turn me off. :)

    2. I knew I forgot one series - I still haven't read that one too Lauren.:/

  8. I'm terrified to read Allegiant too! All the mixed reviews have made me wary and I'm just not sure I want to risk disappointment. Great post!

  9. This is a great post ladies! I actually bought a copy of Allegiant on it's release date, but I'm still on page 100, I don't think that I have the same enthusiasm that I used to have for the previous two books. I'm also scared about picking up Requiem, I really should avoid all the negative reviews, as they tend to influence me greatly in whether I decide to pick up a book or not! :(

    1. I've got a copy too, but it's still on my desk unopened. Yeah I should too, but that's hard to do.

      Izbriši
  10. I've completely eliminated the thought of even reading Allegiant because I found out what happened and let's just say it's not my kind of ending.
I've heard so many mixed things about Requiem so I can understand why you're scared to start it.
Another upcoming one that I'm terrified of reading is Ignite Me. If things don't go my way, I'll be so pissed. :(
I've also heard mixed things about Origin. I have to say that I lost interest in that one after Onyx. I have Sentinel too and I hope things end up in a positive light.
    Great post, ladies!

    1. Well that's too bad. I haven't read the blurb, not to talk about spoilers. So it'll be a new experience to me :)
Yeah Unravel Me set the bar really high so we'll see. Hopefully it'll. Thanks Nick :)

      Izbriši
  11. Oh yes, I suffer from this fear as well!!!! On your list above, I've only read Goddess, everything else I've been delaying despite desperately wanting to know what happens. Except for Allegiant, I already know what happens there. I'm crazy nervous for Sentinel, maybe if we all read it together it will be better. Safety in numbers and all that:)

    1. LOL Maybe we should try. Or organize so that whenever a sequel is published we all read it on a same day :D

      Izbriši
  12. I am reading Pandemonium right now and am nervous on getting the next book :P I already know its open ended and not sure how I feel about that hum... i guess if it's a good open ended then maybe! I can see why you are hesitant on Allegiant. Reading reviews I saw the same things that made me er

    1. Maybe you'll enjoy it. I have read and it was a bit too open but not too bad. Yeah it's the same for most of us.

  13. I haven't read any of those series, but I can empathize with being afraid to read a sequel! I've held off on Through the Ever Night FOREVER because I just loved Under the Never Sky so much, I don't want to be disappointed. Same goes with Insignia's sequel and Shadowfell. I love them both, but I am so, so scared that the sequel will not live up to the awesomeness of the first one.

  14. I am one of the few readers who understood the ending of Requiem and was ok with it. I so understand about being nervous. I bought Allegiant on release day and haven't cracked it open yet. Usually I struggle with final books for two reasons. 1. I fear the ending will disappoint me or 2. I do not want the series to end, and prolong it. LOL Wonderful post!!!

    1. I was okay with it, but I wasn't blown away, which makes a big difference for me as I enjoyed previous books. LOL yeah it's usually like that. Thanks Kim :)

  15. I can tell you that I really liked Goddess, and I think Helen actually kept her badassery in the last book. I'd tell you what happened but it would kinda spoil it... also, I'm quite ashamed to say that I haven't gotten through Clockwork Princess yet. I'm scared because I've already been spoiled and I don't want to say goodbye to Will Herondale just yet??? T.T

  17. I put off reading Allegiant too and then I read spoilers and now I don't want to read it. Not because of WHAT happens but because I know it happens. So that was dumb to spoil myself, lol. Not knowing was getting to me though.

I have a lot of catching up to do with the Morganville Vampires before I get to the final book.

      Izbriši
  18. I sadly haven't read any of those series YET but I do have to say, you have some popular picks there. I can totally relate because I see people saying tons of mixed things about each and every one of these books!

  19. I wasn't able to avoid the spoilers on Allegiant and now I won't read it. No thanks. Lately I suffer from just losing interest in following through with all of the books. Each one of these listed (with the exception of JLA's) have had such long wait times in between I find that I don't really care anymore. Now I just wait until they're all out to read. :/

  21. I also have a problem to read a sequel to the series if I liked the previous book and especially if now there is 'bad' talk around it. I always hesitate and stall a little bit before reading them.
I hope you enjoy all of these!

There are some books/series which I'm still not ready to say goodbye to yet. *cough* Beautiful Redemption *cough* but I can totally see your point.I think everyone is scared for Allegiant. lol. and I've decided to wait till the series gets completed before going to Origin.
