Sunday Post (#10)

Hello all. Well, as some of you know Sundays are always reserved for Sunday Post which is a meme created by lovely Kim @Caffeinated Book Reviews!

Hello all. Long time no see. Well before I start with our weekly stories we must apologize for not being around so much. We're both a bit busy at the moment but still all your comments and support really mean a lot.
But to go on about our lives. Well Glass is currently preparing for some family time. One of her relatives is getting married so she will go to another city for a few days which means you can expect me around. For me, I got a week off before the other part of my exams start but on Thursday I caught some nasty cold and had to stay in bed for a few days. Stress and everything is taking its tool. But hopefully I'll manage to be around more and what's more to actually READ something.

In the meantime the number of our followers passed 900!!!! That's so amazing and you all get a hug!!
Seriously, you guys are amazing and you rock!! We promise to treat you with some nice giveaways soon ;)

Book summary:
Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?
Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.
Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?
As usually I'm late for the party because I always wait too long to start a series. Grave Mercy is one of those books that everyone is talking about and you must live under a rock not to hear about it. I have on multiple occasions but considering this is a book about assassins I knew it'd be a right match for me.

This book takes to Brittany in century and time of great intrigues and fights between courts. Ismae,a girl who managed to escape her father and survive all the years of torture is now ready for a new period in her life. Convent of St. Mortain is not only a nunnery but also a school for assassins, girl assassins who were very valuable for courts and nobles at the time. Being sent for a assignment is a dream for them all, but three friends Ismae, Sybella and Annith (you will notice that they are narrators each book in this series) and after Sybella leaves Ismae has finally got a chance. She has to play a deadly game and make sure that she is on the right side, especially when there is so many sides.

Ismae is a character I connected with right away. I could feel her pain of being abandoned and tortured all her life and her ambition and eagerness to kill stands on right basis. But despite that she is merciful and it was so good to see her out of her element, even though it was obvious.

That leads us to only one problem I had with this book, it's predictability. This is one of those books you know the ending as soon as you crack the first page. But despite that world and charters building was highly enjoyable.

Book summary:
When Sybella arrived at the doorstep of St Mortain half mad with grief and despair the convent were only too happy to offer her refuge - but at a price. The sisters of this convent serve Death, and with Sybella naturally skilled in both the arts of death and seduction, she could become one of their most dangerous weapons. But her assassin's skills are little comfort when the convent returns her to the life that nearly drove her mad. Her father's rage and brutality are terrifying, and her brother's love is equally monstrous. But when Sybella discovers an unexpected ally she discovers that a daughter of Death may find something other than vengeance to live for...

The biggest surprise for me while going through some reviews for Dark Triumph was that people generally enjoyed it more than Grave Mercy while here I am wishing Ismae back. I do understand the switch in narration as Ismae's story is right where it should be and we definitely need Sybella to show us another side of the story so we can have the whole picture. Only problem for me was that Sybella wasn't someone I connected with.

Like Ismae, Sybella has been through hell and back while growing up. Always used and without real protection especially as her father changed wives like some people change shoes. She never had a strong maternal figure to lead her trough life. For that she is used to protecting herself but even being strong and independent her father is not someone she will tackle easily. But now she has new purpose and covenant and her friends give her strength she never had and with that she meets someone who show her that vengeance is not the only feeling there is.

My only struggle here was that at moments I felt like Sybella's character is taken too far and her life is so dark that I have no idea how she get out of that sane. I wasn't sure I could  admire her inhuman strength as it was too much to take in.

But next book Mortal Heart will be about Annith and her situation is the most interesting to me for many reasons and I truly hope it'll put some new light on the story.

Blog Tour: Fury by Charlotte McConaghy

FURY
Hello all. Today I have a blog tour for you. It's for the book titled Fury by Charlotte McConaghy! So if you want you can check out the tour page and schedule.
Buy the book at Amazon

Book summary:
In the tradition of Divergent comes a novel about a world where negative emotions are stolen ... and only those with fury can stand up and fight.
Eighteen-year-old Josephine Luquet wakes naked and covered in blood that is not hers on the same day every year—when the blood moon is full. Josi has not responded to the "Cure"—an immunization against anger mandated by the government—and believes herself to be a threat to others.
Then she meets Luke. Luke has had the Cure but seems different to the other "drones"—and he's dead set on helping Josi discover the truth about herself before the next blood moon.
But time is running out. Is Luke willing to risk his life to be near her? Does he truly understand what violence she is capable of?
Raw and full of passion, Fury is a story of love in a dystopian world, and how much we are willing to forgive in the struggle to remember our humanity.

Taking away human emotions is something I have seen before in dystopian stories, but non of these stories was so dark and intriguing as Fury. Which made this story even more interesting to me is that I'm hardly ever furious, so seeing Josi explode in the nights of the full moon is how I sometimes feel to.

But let's go from the start. Josephine, our main character here is living in an dystopian world where the government has taken negative emotions out of people. They turned them basically into drones, without giving them opportunity to stand up and fight. But Josi is different, every year in time when blood moon is full she loses her memories and that night is always a mystery to her. Her secret stays with her until there is Luke. A guy who seems like any other drone but still different somehow. Josi must be careful as she knows that the government wouldn't be free if they knew her secret.

Beside interesting character and plot I really like the way this story was written. With constant switch from past to present and discovering story bit by bit I really couldn't put it down. Only thing that bothered me was that we get a part of the story which Josi tells to someone and in that part we have Luke's POV included. It wasn't a bad thing but I really had troubles with that as he was not around. It seems illogical to me and while I did like that we had his POV I couldn't get read of the weirdness.

All in all, I really expect this story to become something even more interesting.

Blog Tour: Some Fine Day by Kat Ross

Pre-order the book at

Expected publication: July 1st 2014

Book summary:
Sixteen-year-old Jansin Nordqvist is on the verge of graduating from the black ops factory known as the Academy. She's smart and deadly, and knows three things with absolute certainty:1. When the world flooded and civilization retreated deep underground, there was no one left on the surface.2. The only species to thrive there are the toads, a primate/amphibian hybrid with a serious mean streak.3. There's no place on Earth where you can hide from the hypercanes, continent-sized storms that have raged for decades. Jansin has been lied to. On all counts.
There is something in dystopian settings which seem so real and possible that lure me in. This is one of them. With huge climate-changes happening all over the planet it's really not hard to imagine that the weather will change drastically and that humans won't be able to live in the surface any longer. Well, this book offers you a solution - underground cities. I really hope you're not claustrophobic.

Jansin Nordqvist is a sixteen-year-old cadet living in one of the underground cities within the society highly controlled and divided. As in Utopia everyone knows its place and what one should or should not do. This order is what was a result of people's moving from underground after the hypercanes destroyed any possibility of living on the surface. So now, the government has organized the society and Jansin knows her place. Traveling to surface is something rich members of society get a chance to so the scientist can observe things on the land. Once Jansin gets a chance to travel up she is happily obliges. Only what she's about to learn there is not what the government hoped.

Now we're moving onto a tricky territory as I really don't want to spoil things. You can assume that the government kept many secrets and that Jansin has got to reveal some of them. She discovers life among the rage of hypercanes and her life changes.

Like I said I hope you're not claustrophobic as I really don't know how would I survive under the ground without seeing stars and sky everyday. It's something that people there are used to and how the cities are created under there really blow me away. It's maybe hard to imagine but if you think of it the world builds in your imagination. When it comes to Jansin, she was a great character most of the time, strong, capable and most of all human. But at moments she was too perfect and way too lucky near the end of the story.

What fascinated me here the most was the writing style. Kat Ross really did a great research and all characters possessed the right and suitable voice. And there is also romance which was so sweet and loving to me. It's also action packed and it kept me turning the pages like a madman.

Guest Post
Five Scariest Apocalyptic Scenarios

I wrote a post recently about various End Times themes, and it was pretty tongue-in-cheek. There were zombies (how could there not be?) and there was the Rapture (let's welcome the antichrist to the podium!). But most were unlikely, if not outright silly. So instead of just repeating myself, I thought I'd take a closer look at the worst-case scenario that's actually staring us in the face at this very moment, and which inspired me to write Some Fine Day: climate change.
So here are five of the really scary things that could actually happen if we stay on our current path:

Time to build an ark…
Just losing the West Antarctic Ice Sheet alone would cause the seas to rise by as much as fifteen feet. The bad news is that the collapse has already begun, and "has passed the point of no return," researcher Eric Rignot said at a recent NASA press conference. "The system is in a chain reaction that is unstoppable," he added.
Oh yeah, scientists are also predicting an ice-free Arctic summer by 2016, and Greenland—which has even more water than the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, about twenty-three meters worth of rise—is also in trouble.
The grand total if everything melts? According to this excellent piece by Mother Jones, we're looking at two hundred feet of sea level rise. Two. Hundred. Feet.

Got anything to eat?
Shifting weather patterns are bringing prolonged droughts to some parts of the world and too much rain to others, introducing new crop pests and generally wreaking havoc with the global food system. Add in a growing population, expected to surpass nine billion by 2050, and we're looking at famine and wildly spiking food prices in the near future. But all is not lost! Moving away from the industrial mega-farm model to smaller, more sustainable organic agricultural practices would go a long way toward feeding the world in coming decades.

Forecast: Superstorms
Sandy and Haiyan may be just the beginning. In my book, I imagine a planet stalked by hypercanes—which I didn't make up, by the way. They were first theorized by Kerry Emanuel at MIT in 1994. While these continent-sized storms might never result from climate change alone, there's little doubt that we will seeing many more very strong storms in the future: everything from hurricanes and typhoons to tornado-spawning supercells. Besides the loss of life, the impact of extreme weather on the economy is pretty severe too: the price-tag for Hurricane Sandy alone? $70 billion.

A sixth mass extinction
Welcome to the Anthropocene era: that's what some scientists are calling the period in which human activity is dramatically altering every single one of earth's ecosystems. Unfortunately, most species are unable to cope with the rapid changes. A study published at the end of May warned that plant and animal species are now going extinct at least 1,000 times faster than they did before we appeared. Amphibian populations, which are particularly sensitive to toxins and habitat loss, could be cut in half within the next twenty years.

Acid oceans
There's a lot going on here, but in a nutshell…The seas have long acted as a giant sink, absorbing a lot of the excess carbon dioxide we're putting into the atmosphere and slowing the effects of climate change. Now they're reaching a tipping point, not only threatening all marine life but creating a feedback loop that might actually accelerate planetary warming.

So…what are we supposed to do with all this bad news? That's the giant question of our time and I don't pretend to have easy answers. But it seems abundantly clear that the present course leads to a future about as close as you can get to apocalyptic, not just for the other creatures living here but for us.
Frankly, I feel overwhelmed by it all sometimes. I get depressed. I rant and rave. I still drive a car, and it's not a hybrid because I can't afford one. But I also ride a bike, and I compost, and I turn off lights if no one's in the room, and I signed on with an electric company that uses wind power, and when I vote, I don't vote for people who take money from oil companies and then claim that the science behind climate change is "murky" or "debatable" because that's a complete crock.
Personal actions make a difference. But I think we also owe it to this generation and the next and the next to get out there and demand sensible action from the people in charge (such as cutting out subsidies to fossil fuels and investing in clean energy and energy efficiency), because they're the ones that can throw the brakes on this runaway train.

As Bill McKibben (founder of 350.org) puts it, “Very few people on earth ever get to say: 'I am doing, right now, the most important thing I could possibly be doing.' If you'll join this fight, that's what you'll get to say.”

About the author

I've always loved to read more than anything in the world, especially so-called genre stories—mysteries, fantasy, sci-fi, thrillers, horror. I like books that take you by the hand and lead you out of the mundane. That ease back the curtain and show you the wondrous and dark and unexpected lurking just around the next corner. I worked in journalism for a long time before I returned to writing fiction. Guess which is more fun?

Waiting on Wednesday (#98)

You know the story. This is a meme created by Breaking the Spine and every week we pick books we're waiting for. Here are our picks for this week.

Glass' pick

When two unlikely allies become two unwitting outlaws, will two unforgettable lovers defy unbeatable odds?

Bonnie Rae Shelby is a superstar. She’s rich. She’s beautiful. She’s impossibly famous. And Bonnie Rae Shelby wants to die.

Finn Clyde is a nobody. He’s broken. He’s brilliant. He’s impossibly cynical. And all he wants is a chance at life.

One girl. One boy. An act of compassion. A bizarre set of circumstances. And a choice – turn your head and walk away, or reach out your hand and risk it all?

With that choice, the clock starts ticking on a man with a past and a girl who can’t face the future, counting down the seconds in an adventure riddled with heartbreak and humor, misunderstanding and revelation. With the world against them, two very different people take a journey that will not only change their lives, but may cost them their lives as well.

Infinity + One is a tale of shooting stars and fame and fortune, of gilded cages and iron bars, of finding a friend behind a stranger’s face, and discovering love in the oddest of places.

Expected publication: June 10th, 2014

Tanja's pick

For them, free will is a luxury . . .

Greg Papilio both wants and dreads his impending metamorphosis. He’s tired of being a runt—always picked last on the basketball court—and tired of being ugly, when he could be what girls call “drop dead gorgeous.” But as much as he looks forward to the transformation, he also fears the caste it will inevitably assign to him. He doesn’t want a common caste. He wants a powerful one, a cool one.

Samantha Gibson is average. She’s short and a little full around the hips—a terribly cute look for a future chef. She’s two years away from culinary school, from her uncaring parents, and from carving a perfectly Human future. She wants independence, a career and a quiet life of her own.

Except fate couldn’t care less about what Greg and Samantha want and gives them exactly the opposite. Greg’s metamorphosis assigns him a caste that enslaves him to Samantha, while her chance to attend Le Cordon Bleu is taken away. But things are never as interesting as when Ashby—an intriguing blonde with a hidden identity—enters her life with a splash.

Greg’s fate is to protect Samantha at a time when someone wants her dead. He's her Keeper and will stop at nothing to ensure her safety, even if her secret past proves deadly, even if he's keeping her safe for someone else.

Expected publication: July, 2014

Book summary:

"It started with a game - seduce the new teacher.
Eighteen-year-old Kaitlyn Laurent is living the American Dream. Born into a wealthy, socialite family with more opulent surroundings and material things than any girl could even fathom, Kaitlyn is the fresh, young face amidst a sea of morally-amiss Manhattan Debutantes. She is educated, poised, and on the outside - entirely virtuous. Her life, in short, is perfect.
Or so it would seem.
Inside the walls of her Upper East Side mansion, Kaitlyn is struggling. After her parents' divorce and her father's remarriage to a beautiful but otherwise utterly vapid woman, Kaitlyn quickly finds herself living in a realm of self-created fantasy, completely detached and entirely clashing with her new family – particularly, her classmate-turned-stepbrother, Marius. Arrogant and with a penchant for playing games, he is intrigued and infatuated by Kaitlyn's faux-chaste outer facade that she uses to cover an otherwise calloused heart.
When the two of them enter into into their final semester at Trinity Prep, and the buzz around campus is that a gorgeous new teacher has set foot in the classroom, Marius makes Kaitlyn a bet: seduce the man who is now her Literature teacher.
If she wins, she gets his trust fund. Money that she can use to finally escape a life that she has come to loathe.
If Marius wins...he gets her virginity.
When an initial spark turns into full-blown obsession, and her affections are inevitably returned – Kaitlyn learns that there are no actions without consequence, and some affairs are simply star-crossed."

I didn't expect much, but it still managed to disappoint me. Star-Crossed, a debut novel by Luna Lacour got interesting reviews in the community, some readers loved it while others even gave up on reading it half way trough. I am always curious when I find books with focus on affairs between student and teacher, and I keep hoping I'd finally stumble upon one that gives a well thought trough and more serious approach to the subject. Not much luck so far.

Why Star-Crossed didn't work out for me?
First of all, it reminded me to much of a lot of already seen storylines - Gossip Girl, Cruel Intentions (movie with Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair in main roles)... Second, writing was so weird. I had to re-read some of the sentences to figure out their meaning. Third, plot has so many inconsistencies and character development is really superficial. I felt as if certain things were picked up because of scandalous and melodramatic effect with no actual intention to explain reasoning of actions, thoughts or why things happen the way they did. I couldn't connect with Kaitlyn at all - actually, she annoyed me. To be completely honest with you, I am not even sure why I didn't DNFed this book.

Who should read it? Fans of taboo themes and a lot of drama. But if you want to read a really good book about this topic with all of those things, I recommend Taming the Beast by Emily Maguire.

 Happy reading,

What To Do When You Suffer From A Reading Slump?

I have to write a disclaimer first.
All credits for this post goes to Aman from Enticed by Books.

Last month she wrote one very interesting post: What to do when in a reading slump? and answer was: "Binge Watch Great TV Shows!!"!
I have to say that I agree with her. (I know that you are smiling while reading this, Aman.)

Here is my list of best TV shows that will help you with reading issues.

1. The Originals

I was absolutely amazed with this show. My favorite anti-hero and villain didn't disappoint.
The best part about The Originals is that main focus of the story is not romance or love triangles. Older characters are that oh so sweet bonus.  I am addicted to CW shows no matter the fact that a lot of them are quite trashy, but this one is a whole level of different.
I just hope they won't ruin the story in second season.

2. Teen Wolf

Me watching Teen Wolf is completely Siiri's fault.
You know her from Little Pieces of Imagination.

I didn't expect much of it, but it is so addicting and you just can't stop watching once you start.

3. The Walking Dead

I know that everyone is obsessed with this show, but I always refused to watch it because it features zombies. I do not like zombies.
And then my boyfriend saw promo on TV and decided that we will watch it together. Because surviving. And apocalypse.
The most unimaginable thing happen - I got hooked.
This is probably one of the best shows I've ever saw.

4. The O.C.

 Fun and fluffy and mindless.

I can watch this show over and over and over again.

5. One Tree Hill

But only first season. And maybe second.

Hm, now I want to watch it again. *Runs away to find DVDs*

What would you add to this list?
