The Sunday Post (#29)

Hello all. Well, as some of you know Sundays are always reserved for Sunday Post which is a meme created by lovely Kim @Caffeinated Book Reviews!

Morning sweethearts. We hope that you're having a lazy Sunday and that you've had a great week. We can both say that we were rather busy. Tanja has been drowned in the college stuff and it's only second week of her classes. Life is not fair. But well this is also the last year so she will survive. Glass on the other hand has been busy with some readings. She got addicted to the Gypsy Brothers series. So pardon us for lack of interaction this week.
But good news is that in the week to come you can expect more of Glass around and occasionally Tanja will be stalking you too (as she always does;)). Beware!

ARC Review: Beware the Wild by Natalie C. Parker

Expected publication: 21st October

Book summary:
It's an oppressively hot and sticky morning in June when Sterling and her brother, Phin, have an argument that compels him to run into the town swamp -- the one that strikes fear in all the residents of Sticks, Louisiana. Phin doesn't return. Instead, a girl named Lenora May climbs out, and now Sterling is the only person in Sticks who remembers her brother ever existed.
Sterling needs to figure out what the swamp's done with her beloved brother and how Lenora May is connected to his disappearance -- and loner boy Heath Durham might be the only one who can help her.
This debut novel is full of atmosphere, twists and turns, and a swoon-worthy romance.
Are you willing to embrace weirdness and just go with the flow, without taking in consideration where that river might take you? Just read and not think about logic. Also do you like books that have realistic setting but much unrealistic elements? If the answer is yes then this is probably book for you.

After seeing this cover for the first time I knew I needed this book in my life and after it landed on my Kindle I couldn't  but do happy dance around the room. But after I started reading it I was a bit skeptical. Beware the Wild starts with the story in present. You get to meet Sterling while she is waiting at the police station and it takes few pages to get the story behind her anxiousness. Her brother had sort of a breakdown and went to the place that's been source of their fears for many years - swamp. The next day things change in her home. Suddenly her brother is magically replaced with Lenora May who got out of the swamp and took his place with people behaving like it was always that way. All but Sterling and Heath, who need to find a way to understand this.

Books with fantasy elements set in realistic environment are usually hit or miss for me. I like my fantasy reads in another worlds, and realistic settings in contemporary books. So I'm not sure how I feel about this. I did like the whole mystical setting and it was really vivid and unusual, but at the same time I was really hard to get myself involved with this idea.

When it comes to characters and romance, well Sterling was a really determined girl. I admired her willingness and strength but at the same time her recklessness bothered me from time to time. Hugh was also really interesting and real character but at the same time he didn't feel like someone who has strong views as he followed Sterling almost blindly. At the same time both were real, with real issues and troubles. And their romance was really sweet and nicely developed. It's one from friends to lovers kind which we all tend to love.

This book had a really interesting mix of elements which wasn't really according to my desires but still it worked out just fine.

Rating: 3.5 stars.

Waiting on Wednesday (#117)

You know the story. This is a meme created by Breaking the Spine and every week we pick books we're waiting for. Here are our picks for this week.

Glass' pick

From New York Times bestselling author Megan Hart comes a haunting and insightful novel about a woman trying to find her place in the world…

Brought up in the savage captivity of her unstable grandmother's rural Pennsylvania home, Mari Calder once yearned for rescue. Now she struggles every day to function as an adult in the confines of normal society. Left with only a foggy recollection of her childhood, she's consumed with being a dutiful wife to her husband, Ryan, and mother to their two children.

But an unexpected twist of events returns her to that long-forgotten house in the woods. Soon, Mari is greeted with reminders of a past life, the clarified memories only inviting a new level of strangeness into her fragile world. To protect her family, she must find the beautiful, powerful strength hidden in her inner chaos. Because someone is bent on exploiting Mari's trauma, and as normal and wild begin to blend, a string of devastating truths force Mari to question all she thought she knew.

A TREMBLING EARTH
The flames of civil war sweep across the Shima Imperium. With their plans to renew the Kazumitsu dynasty foiled, the Lotus Guild unleash their deadliest creation—a mechanical goliath known as the Earthcrusher, intended to unite the shattered Empire under a yoke of fear. With the Tiger Clan and their puppet Daimyo Hiro in tow, the Guild marches toward a battle for absolute dominion over the Isles.

A BROKEN REBELLION
Yukiko and Buruu are forced to take leadership of the Kagé rebellion, gathering new allies and old friends in an effort to unite the country against the chi-mongers. But the ghosts of Buruu’s past stand between them and the army they need, and Kin’s betrayal has destroyed all trust among their allies. When a new foe joins the war tearing the Imperium apart, it will be all the pair can do to muster the strength to fight, let alone win.

A FINAL BATTLE
The traitor Kin walks the halls of Guild power, his destiny only a bloody knife-stroke away. Hana and Yoshi struggle to find their place in a world now looking to them as heroes. Secret cabals within the Lotus Guild claw and struggle; one toward darkness, the other toward light. And as the earth splits asunder, as armies destroy each other for rule over an empire of lifeless ash and the final secret about blood lotus is revealed, the people of Shima will learn one last, horrifying truth.

There is nothing a mother won't do to keep her children by her side.

The Awakening of Leeowyn Blake by Mary Parker

Buy the book at

Book summary:
I'm a normal teenager. I have a normal teenage life with normal teenage problems. The summer is my heaven. I live with my mom during the summer months. We stay in her tiny condo in Jacksonville, Florida. My parents split up when I was little. I'm not sure why. My mom never talks about it. Whatever it was, it was bad enough to make my mom pack me up in the middle of the night when I was four years old and run to my Gran's condo. My mom got the condo after Gran died. From that time on all I had known my entire life was beach life. Until four years ago. Until my uncle found me.
Before I start with my review for this book I just wanted to say that this blurb could be used as an example of how you do them. I knew that something paranormal was behind all this but I had no clue what's it about until it got revealed in the book. So I got to say that this book took my by surprise.

Now I wish I could say that everything else about this book was as good but sadly I cannot. We start with Leeowyn here, as our main character. She is a teenage girl whose life was suddenly changed when her uncle appears. This story is told in fragments at the start so we get thrown back in the past from time to time to see what happened to her and to get the full picture. It wasn't badly done, but the deal with me is that Lee and I didn't connect and she tended to annoy me a lot. She was one of those whiny girls, and I wish it was much sooner that she got her back into her senses and started to behave like it was expected from her. Sadly this way I assume that we can expect that from her in the sequel.

That being sad I feel like this one has created a really nice foundation for the future books and I truly hope that the next ones will be nicely character and world built which would make me go back to this series.

But despite that just the fact that I had no idea what was going on through the most of the book kept me turning the pages and at the end I have read this one faster than expected.

Rating: 2.5 stars.

ARC Review: Stitching Snow by R. C. Lewis

Buy the book at
Author's
Expected publication: October 14th 2014

Book summary:
Princess Snow is missing.
Her home planet is filled with violence and corruption at the hands of King Matthias and his wife as they attempt to punish her captors. The king will stop at nothing to get his beloved daughter back—but that’s assuming she wants to return at all.
Essie has grown used to being cold. Temperatures on the planet Thanda are always sub-zero, and she fills her days with coding and repairs for the seven loyal drones that run the local mines.
When a mysterious young man named Dane crash-lands near her home, Essie agrees to help the pilot repair his ship. But soon she realizes that Dane’s arrival was far from accidental, and she’s pulled into the heart of a war she’s risked everything to avoid. With the galaxy’s future—and her own—in jeopardy, Essie must choose who to trust in a fiery fight for survival.
This is where things get a bit tricky. I truly want to believe that every books has its story to tell and that not two people can write the same, regardless of how similar they are and it's true they cannot. I do also believe that every book is its own entity but despite my efforts not to compare this one with The Lunar Chronicles it's really hard not to do so.

Once again I was faced with a fairy tale retelling set in the future which makes this book a nice combo of genres and which is something I highly enjoy. Essie as our main character here is a girl that fights her own battles. She is strong and capable and really smart and good with technology (familiar?). She must take care of herself and seven! droids in order to survive, as she escaped from what she truly is. She hoped that things will stay that way, but universe and Dane had other plans for her.

When I started reading Stitching Snow I really though I'd give up at the start as it was really slow and it took me some time to get into the story and for the pacing to pick up. It did and now I'm glad that I continued. Despite my familiarity with the whole concept I still was surprised with some moments in this book. Also I really liked the chemistry and how it all developed between Dane and Essie. It was sweet and slow burning which is how I like my romance in books.

But the problem here is that Essie dominated the whole time that other characters couldn't get any spotlight and another thing is that villains here weren't as dominant as you expect them to be. They felt like those villains you get in fairy tales, they are mean just because someone has to be. Also there was that relationship between Essie and her father which seemed more complicated than I though, but sadly we didn't get to see the full background of it.

I truly believe that all people who haven't read Lunar series will be blow away with Stitching Snow, but to us who are slightly familiar with this all some things weren't as interesting, but at the same time this story brings some fresh air and some new concept to dystopian fairy tale retellings.

Rating: 3 stars.

The Sunday Post (#28)

Hello all. Well, as some of you know Sundays are always reserved for Sunday Post which is a meme created by lovely Kim @Caffeinated Book Reviews!

Sadly, yet another week where we didn't have time to be around. Again that thing called life interfered with out blogging. Glass' family is still visiting and she doesn't have time to be around, while Tanja's classes have started and it seems like this last year is going to be the hardest.
Therefore, we have to say that we're slowing down. There is no point of posting everyday when we don't get to visit other bloggers and read other posts and interact with all of you. So you can expect only a couple posts a week now. It had to happen sooner or later. But still we'll give our best to be around as much as we can.
Thanks for understanding! Love!

My rating: 4 stars

Book summary:

"Sandra Brown, the #1 New York Times bestselling author, keeps readers turning pages with an explosive tale of a long-ago crime and the victim's plan for revenge...When New York publisher Maris Matherly Reed receives a tantalizing manuscript from someone identified only as P.M.E., its blockbuster potential-and perhaps something else-compels her to meet its author. On an eerie, ruined cotton plantation on a remote Georgia island she finds Parker Evans, a man concealing his identity and his past. Maris is drawn into his tale of two young friends and a deadly betrayal ... and to Parker himself. But there's something especially chilling about this novel, its possible connection to Maris's own life, and the real-life character who uses her, or anyone, to get what he wants."

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19437947-envy

This summer I started to read suspense/thriller novels and they became my new obsession. Yes, there a cliches even here, but nothing that I can't get over. I thought that there would be no one better than Linda Howard. And then I started to read Sandra Brown.

Five reasons why you should read Envy:

  • Story that will keep your attention until the very end. It just pulls you in from the page one and doesn't let you go. I couldn't do anything else but read because I had to know what happens next. And you get two stories in one - I should probably stop talking now before I spoil it for you. The best way to read this book would be just to pic it up an read. Don't ask too many quetions.
  • Characters. So complex and well developed. You live and breathe with them.
  • Writing. And all parts about being a writer. I like to say that you can always notice when author writes about something that is familiar and personal for her/him, and there is nothing more personal for author than the very process of writing and creating fictional world.
  • Angst, but not the kind of angst you will find in popular trashy romance novels.
  • Parker. He is heart and soul of this book and one of the most intriguing characters I've read about.

But unfortunately, Envy didn't stay amazing all way trough. Last few chapters were rushed and filled with too much melodrama. I wish it ended differently, but still it was a good book.

Who should read it? Fans of good suspense stories.

 Happy reading,

ARC Review: Stray by Elissa Sussman

Buy the book at
Author's

Book summary:
“I am grateful for my father, who keeps me good and sweet. I am grateful for my mother, who keeps her own heart guarded and safe. I am grateful for my adviser, who keeps me protected. I am grateful for the Path, which keeps me pure. Ever after.”
Princess Aislynn has long dreamed about attending her Introduction Ball, about dancing with the handsome suitors her adviser has chosen for her, about meeting her true love and starting her happily ever after.
When the night of the ball finally arrives and Nerine Academy is awash with roses and royalty, Aislynn wants nothing more than to dance the night away, dutifully following the Path that has been laid out for her. She does not intend to stray.
But try as she might, Aislynn has never quite managed to control the magic that burns within her-magic brought on by wicked, terrible desires that threaten the Path she has vowed to take.
After all, it is wrong to want what you do not need. Isn’t it?
We discussed this a great deal in the past so I guess that sadly I got another book to put on my "I like the idea but not the characters or vice versa" shelf, as Stray was just that. It gave me an insight into a really interesting and magical world but at the same time it gave me a main character I couldn't connect with.

Stray takes you to another world, which has some elements you are familiar with but still combines them in the interesting manner and with that creating an equally interesting world. It's a world where girls are bound to follow the Path or they will go Stray and with that rejected from the society. One of the rules of the Path is not to use your magic abilities aka "Conseal don't feel. Don't let them see" but some rules are there to be broken.

So there is Aislynn our main character here, whom I cannot but describe as boring most of the times. She really didn't have anything that appealed to me. She was just a pawn that told us the story. There was no connection between us, or actually between me or any other character. Sometimes I felt like that was the role they played and it fits their position, but at other times it bored me.

Another trouble here is the whole point of all this. This story offers you so much of everything, but when you think of it at the end you know nothing. I have holes in my brain about this world, about some characters and their point in this whole world. Also just a side note: you cannot give a wolf that name, just no! It bothered me to no end.

Not to be completely negative, in Stray you'll find a nice romance. It's actually how I like them in fantasy stories. It's there and you can see it develop but at the same time it never shadows the plot or the world. It just follows it and never takes over.

Still the official Goodreads page promises us more books that are set in this world, and with that I truly believe that at least one character I'll be able to connect with. Till then.

Rating: 3 stars.

Until the next time,

(Cover Reveal) Pull (Push, #2) by Claire Wallis

Expected publication date:
November 6th 2014
(available for pre-order on October 20th)

Book summary:

***PULL is the continuation of Claire Wallis' sharp and shocking debut novel, PUSH. It is the second book in the series and is not intended to be a standalone.***

"It is impossible for someone like me—someone with a sin-list capable of wrapping itself around the world—to find redemption. To be repaired."
David Calgaro has secrets, and the only woman he's ever loved is about to pay the ultimate price to protect them. He's spent a lifetime searching for purpose and control. And the only place he's managed to find them is in a single, perfect moment; a moment in which he has absolute control over someone else's life.
David is unredeemable, unfixable, unsalvageable. But Emma Searfoss has forced a tiny sliver of hope to penetrate his soul. Hope that, even though redemption is impossible, maybe life isn't. Maybe he isn't who he thought he was. Maybe he's meant to be more.

This is a new adult novel with mature content for readers 17 and up.

Tanja's pick

Ares, God of War, is leading the other dying gods into battle. Which is just fine with Athena. She's ready to wage a war of her own, and she's never liked him anyway. If Athena is lucky, the winning gods will have their immortality restored. If not, at least she'll have killed the bloody lot of them, and she and Hermes can die in peace.

Cassandra Weaver is a weapon of fate. The girl who kills gods. But all she wants is for the god she loved and lost to return to life. If she can't have that, then the other gods will burn, starting with his murderer, Aphrodite.

The alliance between Cassandra and Athena is fragile. Cassandra suspects Athena lacks the will to truly kill her own family. And Athena fears that Cassandra's hate will get them ALL killed.

The war takes them across the globe, searching for lost gods, old enemies, and Achilles, the greatest warrior the world has ever seen. As the struggle escalates, Athena and Cassandra must find a way to work together. Because if they can't, fates far worse than death await.
