As their electrifying puzzle unfolds, so unfolds a town where friends become enemies, and enemies become unrecognizable and intertwined. Tortured heroes just might be the bad guys, and Donna discovers that her and Ryan’s secrets are powerful enough to destroy everyone... including themselves."

My review:

Shock Me by Ashley Harris is a story with new, fresh premise and I believe that fans of paranormal young adult novels will be thrilled to read it.

I was completely hooked after reading prologue - it goes few months ahead and than author returns back to tell you what is going on. But the thing is, you have no idea what is going on. I hate that opening scenes where you find out about main plot twist even before you start to actually read. Ashley Harris managed to masterfully confuse you and leave you wanting more.

Now, what I really liked is that she didn't make everything about angsty paranormal romance - if they are not together the whole world will come to its end. Don't be disappointed - there is brooding, hot guys and chemistry sparkling all around like crazy, but you will be so surprised. I now I did - after first third of the book I thought I had it all figured out, but I was so wrong.

One thing that I mind was constant switching of narrators - almost every character at some point tells you what is going on. That overwhelmed me at times, but I have to admit that it probably gave that extra something to the reading experience. I had started reading Shock Me before I read author info. Why is that important? Well, I noticed that whole book had "movie script" feel and I could clearly imagine everything in my head. Now I know that tat is no coincidence considering that Ashley Harris is also movie director.
I'm wondering if we will be seeing this in cinema soon.

My final judgement? Enjoyable 4 stars read.

About author:

Author and film director Ashley C. Harris resides in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. When she is not hard at work writing or dreaming up new indie films she spends her time working out, reading the bible, and going on breath-taking adventures with her sister.

The seed for becoming an author started budding for Ashley in the third grade, when she wrote her first hundred page book during her class's quite time, her teacher couldn't believe it and voiced over her that surly she'd become an author someday. Those words never left Ashley and she has been writing ever since.

Ashley loves to create young adult, science fiction, fantasy novels, and is currently working on her first steamy romance... with more to come.

  1. That cover is crazy, pretty yet disturbing!

This is the first I am hearing about this one. I hear you on the switching of narrators, it really has to be done well and when it is, it really does give the book that little something extra only it could give.

    1. I thought the same thing about the cover, but it fits perfectly to the story.

  2. I don't love the fact that there are so many different narrators, I usually struggle when there are so many, but everything else about this one sounds great! It's such a risky thing I think for an author to deliberately confuse a reader, it can backfire so easily, but when done well? LOVE IT! I like being disoriented and thinking one thing is going to happen only to find out how very wrong I am. Fabulous review Glass!

    1. I know, I read few books where author tried to do same thing, but it was just big failure. Ashley Harris did it so good.
      Thank you, Jenny.

  3. This sounds like an exciting read. I'm wondering about the romance. I don't like overly angsty romances, either, but I do want a satisfying one in there. Wonderful review, Glass. :)

    1. I loved it because whole paranormal twist isn't actually based on love story, you now like Twilight or Hush, Hush.

  4. Brooding hot guys and sparkling chemistry, eh? :D I'm glad to hear the book doesn't entirely revolve around the romance, though!

  6. I actually enjoy Mulitple POVs as long as it is done right and there is no confusion. I think this sounds very interesting.

    1. I have to be in the right mood for it and, honestly, not all authors can pull it off.

  7. I don't think I would appreciate so many narrators, it's not the sort of thing I enjoy, but on the other hand, it's so difficult to confuse/surprise me these days that that alone makes this book worth reading.
    Lovely review as usual.

  8. Interesting cover; I like the purple.

I don't mind multiple point of views. Too many can be confusing, but I like getting various sides of a story.

  9. Ooh I love hearing that this managed to confuse and surprise you! I actually quite like when books have a movie script feel, and it certainly seems like this would be a great choice for a movie adaptation. Great review!

  10. I don't like books that have POVs that jump around a lot so I'm not too sure about this one but I love the cover!

    Great review, Tanja! <33

    1. That turn of events doesn't work out every time. I read Immortal City by Scott Speer last year and it was such a disappointing book..(

  12. I like it when a book takes you completely by surprise and doesn't follow the typical paranormal route that a lot of books tend to go down. I'm glad you had such a fun reading experience with this book! Lovely review Glass!

  13. Uh-uh! Sometimes you truly get the plot twist in the prologue and honestly, what's the point of reading the book then? I'm glad that this one managed to still surprise you though :) I can take 3 (sometimes 4) POVs the most. Then I'm done. I just can't take any more POVs, especially if they're in 3rd person narrative. I'm glad that you enjoyed it so much! On a side note though, I really dislike the cover. I don't know why, it just doesn't sit well with me O.o I like the colour purple, I like the font and how the author's name is presented down below, but I just don't like the cover in general :( Eh.. Yeah. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Glass!

  14. Sorry to hear the switching of narrators wasn't a plus to the story

  15. I'm not sure what I think of the cover. I do love the title font and style though. I love books with good twists and not extreme angst in the romance department. This sounds good!

  16. OK, I'm sorry, but can I be honest? This cover is a bit too messy for my taste. I have an idea what the weird thing on her face was supposed to convey, but I think it didn't quite work out the way it was supposed to. The book sounds really good tho and I would still read it, despite the cover :) It's all about what's inside after all! :) Thanks for sharing, lovely review!
