Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten "Gateway" Books/Authors In My Reading Journey

Hello all. Today is another Tuesday and it's time for another Top Ten Tuesday which is all you all know a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. So our topic for today is top ten gateway books or better say my list will be a list of books that got me into some genres or brought me back to some genre. Here they are.

First book that told me I'd become a reader
Book that introduced me to YA
Books that introduced me to Urban Fantasy
Books that brought me back to chick-lit
Books that made me love re-tellings
Books that will get me out of any reading slump

I'd love to see your picks as well so feel free to link them up in comments below.

Until the next time,

  1. Cinder was also the book that got me into retellings. My gateway book into reading in general was Evernight by Claudia Gray.

  13. Ah, The Little Prince :') Le sigh. That's such a wonderful, inspiring and thoughtful story :) VAMPIRE ACADEMY. 'nuff said. Also, to me UF introduction was with Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead, but can't wait to read Darkfever :) Cinder, yay!!! So happy we're both new fans to this series and whohoo! Can't wait to crack the spine of Cruel Beauty already :) Great choices, Tanja!

  14. The Vampire Academy is my favourite series and one that introduced me to the world of Vampires and the various novels on them after Twilight of course! I haven't read Cruel Beauty but its on my next to be read list. I wasn't a fan of Cinder for some reason though. Love Jennifer E Smith's books!! :) Lovely choices, Tanja! :)

  15. Oh I love this! I think Cinder would be my retelling one because I didn't like them before. Cruel Beauty was great as well. I know my opening to fantasy was The Mists of Avalon. I can't think of any others though.

  16. YESS to VA! I that that was the series that reinstated my interest I guess in Vampires (post-twilight) and anything really paranormal/fantasy-ish? I don't know how to describe it all that well but definetly helped me in that element LOL!
    Great choices!

  22. I love this topic! I always feel awful that in my Children's Lit class in college there were two books in our reading schedule lineup that I never got a chance to read and one was The Little Prince. I should dig out the copy and give it a read. The other was The Giver. Yep, kicking myself. I can see VA being a gateway to YA, and a good one! Harry Potter was what got me reading again but it was Twilight that got me really into YA. :)

  23. Ooh I love these gateway books! VA is totally an amazing way to start YA (so much better than Twilight and other gateway books). I agree, Cinder got me hooked on retellings, and Jellicoe Road can get me out of any reading slump. Fab list, thanks for sharing!

  24. Nice list, but we've had such a different reading journey ;) If I made a list like this, it would've been so different. I've read half of these, and I only love The Little Prince & Cinder, and I still need to read a few of the rest, they've been forever on my TBR list :)
