Book summary:
Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave.
One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black.
This is a year of me putting my task manager and finally reading some authors I've been avoiding for a while. Holly Black is not an exception and after hearing some amazing things about her Curse Workers series I decided to finally discover her stories. So when The Coldest Girl in Coldtown came out I knew that I need to read it. I mean, YA paranormal stand-alone book! It's basically unheard of these days.

Tana (that the closest to my name I'll get in YA it seems) our main character here is a normal girl given the circumstances. She lives in a world where vampires and predators and they are quarantined in cities called Coldtowns only she never though she would have to go there as once you enter you never go back. When her friends were killed after a party in safe house she knows she has to run and don't look back, but the problem is that on her way she sees her ex-boyfriend and a boy and she has to free them. It means also that predators will have more time to catch them and they must race and find a way to survive.

Considering that much of this story was not put into blurb I won't spoil a thing. I will just tell you that this is a book that it's really unique and fun. With great spectra of characters and it was so interesting to see how different types responded differently to the whole vampire invasion. But at the same time it's dark and really filled with horror. But my fave part of all is romance which was so good and grabbed me from the start.

Only downside of this story was its slow pace which bothered me at moments. But all in all, really interesting story and I'll be reading more of Holly Black's book soon enough.

Rating: 4 stars.

Until the next time,

  3. I download eBooks a lot from the library and they have this one. I've debated back and forth on reading it because I'm a wimp and wasn't sure if it would be too gory and scary....I really am a wimp. I do like that it is a stand alone!

  4. I've yet to read Black's White Cat series, so I'm really looking forward to this one as it sounds way more interesting. Plus, that cover... can you really say no to that? You wouldn't have guessed there were vampires involved. haha. Will be definitely taking a second look at this one!

  5. I adored the Curse Workers series. I've been wanting to read this one, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Thanks for this review. Now I want to read it even more! Is it really a stand alone? For some reason I thought it was going to be a series.

  9. I got into a few chapters before giving up on this one, sadly. The writing style wasn't really for me. I'm glad to know someone else liked it, at least. I read the first Curse Workers novel and didn't enjoy it either. Anyway, awesome review, Tanja, and I'm glad you liked it!

  18. I have been wanting to read this FOREVER. I have the short story I think this was based on in one of my anthologies (at least it's by the same author, and bares the same name), so I'll be interested to compare them afterwards, but that's not the point, LOL. Great review, Tanja! And thanks for the extra motivation ;)
