Book summary:
Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.
She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.
She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.
She’s wrong.
With this review I've accomplished and therefore completed my 2013-TBR-pile-challenge. I wish it ended the way it started with books that became my favorite, but sadly this book disappointed me on so many levels.

Everything started on a great note though. I've said several times that books that deal with memory loss tend to be pure enjoyment for me. The story usually slowly unwraps in front of your eyes and you get to meet characters slowly. It started that way with Mara, our main character here. After a big accident in which her best friend, so-called friend and boyfriend died and Mara is a sole survivor. Her memories are in blur and slowly she tries to remember. Her family though that it'd be for the best for them to move to Florida.

Then everything started getting bad. First and probably the most annoying thing for me was when we get to meet the love interest here - Noah. You've met this guy before - overprotective, mysterious, of course great-looking, oh and I almost forgot filthy rich. It was so cliche that I couldn't but roll my eyes all the time. Mara of course falls deeply in love and you know how that goes.

There was also a problem of presenting this book as paranormal when it actually can be placed easily on contemporary shelf. There are hints of paranormal here and there but what is going on is a total mystery till the end. I guess it all gets developed in the sequel but there wasn't enough information to get me interested for the whole concept.

If I had read this few years ago I'd have probably loved it. Today a lot of things here fall into "been there, done that" category.

Rating: 2 stars.

Until the next time,

  1. Oh no, that is too bad. I have heard a lot of great things about this one, but, it just goes to show that not every read is for everyone.

    1. That's true. Maybe you'll enjoy it more than me :)

  2. It's so interesting that you say if you'd read this a few years ago you would have loved it! That's exactly how I feel—I actually did read book one a few years ago, and I loved it. I wasn't bothered by the plot snafus and character flaws that would send me running for the hills now. Because of that, I'm invested enough to keep going with the series, but if it was new to me now, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be as into it. I totally understand your issues, and appreciate your thoughtful review!

    1. Same is with Twilight. Once upon a time it was like a masterpiece for me but today I see all the flaws. Thanks Lauren :)

  3. Everyone thinks differently of this book and I highly doubt that I will like this much so I won't be picking this one up anytime soon.

    Lovely review, Tanja! <33

  4. I felt the same way about this one. It started off really interesting, but I lost all interest and just gave up at the 75% mark. I love these covers, but the books themselves are not for me. Wonderful review, though, Tanja!

    1. I managed to finish it but didn't enjoy last part either. Thanks Keertana :)

  5. I think your last line exactly matches my feelings on this book too. I'd had this book for sometime too, but just never got around to picking it up until recently, it was just full of too many cliches for my liking. I've heard the second book is tons better though, I'm not sure that I'll be giving it a try anytime soon. Great review Tanja!

  6. Awwww sorry this one just didn't work for you Tanja! I absolutely loved it, but I can also see why it's one that doesn't work for everyone. Your last line does make me wonder though - while Noah wasn't a "new" character a few years ago, since then there have been even more boys like him that have flooded the YA/NA market, so I think if it were possible, it would be really interesting to see if you liked it better when it first came out. Still, I enjoyed reading your thoughts!

  8. Honestly, I still don't know if it's a paranormal or not. You HAVE to give the second book a chance. I gave the first on 2.5 out of 5 and the second one was almost a 5 I think. It was so fucking creepy and so so so good and thrilling. There were plot twists I never saw coming and.. oh dear lord. I need to do a re-read before The Retribution in June. Shit. I'm scared of this book :D Like literally scared. I hope you give it a try and will love it tons like I did. Lovely review, sweets!

  9. I know it's going to sound awful, but I'm so glad you were disappointed by this one - because I was too! This book has 5 star reviews everywhere I turn, but I was not bowled over by Noah or the mystery aspects. I'm glad I wasn't imagining the problems I had with this one. Thanks honey for the honest review.

  11. I've heard some negative things about this one. It doesn't sound like the best book...definitely not the sort of thing I'd probably love. I hate the cliché love interests these days.

  14. I haven't read this series either. I remember all the buzz around it but either people loved it or they hated it. I think I will pass, I have so many better books in my pile to get to! Have a wonderful weekend, Tanja!

  15. Oh girlie, I am so heartbroken! I totally understand how you feel, though. I've read this book long before it was published, so before the whole hype rolled around. I went into it without any expectations and I must admit, I really loved it. I loved the sequel too (it's where the whole paranormal craziness happens). And I didn't really mind Noah. I guess he was a bit steretypical now that I think about it, but I really enjoyed his arrogance and self-confidence and I loved the dialogues between him and Mara. Yeah, I'm sad you didn't enjoy it more, but that's just life I guess, we can't all like the same books :) Great review, though! Have a great weekend!

    1. You read it at different times and I'd probably love it then. But I've seen too many "Noah"s with time so I got tired. Thanks Evie :)

  16. Aw, that's so sad man, that you didn't like this one. I loved it when I read it a year ago. It was a disgustingly creepy read but let me tell you that I wasn't a big fan of Noah and am still not one. I can see why you didn't enjoy this so much. After a while, paranormal reads all start looking the same to me as well and this was, as you say, somewhere in between a contemp and a paranormal read. What I also loved about the book was Mara's family, especially her brothers and that Jamie guy. I feel sad this didn't turn out to be a great read for you. Awesome review, Tanja!

    1. This book had some good moments, but it didn't have enough paranormal to keep me interested. I do understand that as probably the author had sequel planed out. Glad you enjoyed it more than me dude! Thanks :)

      Izbriši
  17. Oh no! I wished you liked this one more, but I totally can see where you're coming from. The sequel is a lot better, but the problem I had with Unbecoming is the romance took over all the cool hallucinations. So I can see how it would act more like a contemporary for you.

    1. I had problems with romance being in focus all the time, the whole paranormal part lacked because of it. Thanks, I'll probably read the sequel then :)

  18. ...yeah. I was not a fan of this one either, it will go down in history as one of the longest reviews I've ever written, hah. Also, probably the most detailed negative review for me, too--there was just so much about it that I didn't like, including the too-good-to-be-true Noah. I'm sorry you were disappointed, though--so many people seem to love this series.

  20. I read this and wasn't impressed either, Tanja. I couldn't tell what was real and what was made up in her mind. It was confusing and I doubt I'd ever pick up the 2nd book. Great honest review, Tanja. Congrats on meeting your challenge! :)

  21. I very much disliked this book too, Tanja. I honestly don't see why it is so hyped. I thought the idea about memory loss was cool and frightening but the annoying love interest pretty much ruined the whole book for me. I agree that he was a cliche.
I hope your next read is much better, Tanja! Lovely honest review.

  23. Eh. At least you completed your tbr challenge :/ I don't mind cliche love interests on the outside... if they have depth and real unique personalities to them even if they are cliche I'll like the character. There's a lot of mixed reviews I've read for this one so I can't say I'm surprised you didn't like it ):
And yes amnesia cases are usually so cool! It's a great mystery concept.

  24. I have heard similar things, that some felt like it was cliche. I didn't feel that way at all for some reason and really loved Noah. I'm sorry that it didn't work the same way for you though! I have heard that some that didn't like the first did like the second. I just read through the comments and Evie kind of said what I could say too. I read it long before the hype and had no expectations. Which I think can make a difference.
