The Empyrean Key by J.L. Tomlinson

Author's

Book summary:
In Ardentia, a land carved by the Celestials and their magic, a great King lies dying.
Narcean soothsayer, Friziel Sunrender, has foreseen a shadow that threatens this already war-torn world, and whispers on the wind hint at the return of an ancient evil. To stave off this threat, he must call upon the halfbreed girl-child he banished years ago.
As a not-so-perceptive telepath and amateur scam-runner, Jahna Mornglow has filled the void left by an absent father, with the friendships of a bloodthirsty bar-maid and a bullied book-worm. Her mother, scarred by the racial prejudices of her past, refuses to nurture Jahna's Narcean abilities of prophecy and telepathy, warning her of the hate beyond the safety of Groden Cove – a beachside safe haven for misfits and those who wish to be left alone.
When hidden enemies move their pieces into play as the King's condition worsens; Jahna learns the true extent of her lineage, and is tasked with restoring a Celestial artifact known as The Empyrean Key. Jahna must now keep safe the world that has shunned and discarded her.
If you have read that blurb and figured out that this book is a fantasy, set in a new world and with that huge adventure coming on then you might think it's a right book for me. I did, so when I got a review request for it and I read this blurb it was screaming my name and I always answer to books.

So as I already said this book is a really great adventure story with a really interesting plot. I was really happy to be thrown into another world again. Here we are firstly in Groden Cave where we meet Jahna, our main character of the story. Besides her we meet her two best friend, one of them is a nerd and the other is a strongman or better said strongwoman. That is the point which makes this story not just interesting, but also hilarious. I enjoyed reading about reversed roles here and it was so much fun to have a girl who is the strong one and a boy whose nose is always in a book. Back to Jahna, well you probably assume that she is not that ordinary and she is not in fact. After discovering the truth about her origin she is read for the quest. That quest is also where she will meet some interesting faces and among them a really interesting boy.

As you can see this story has everything anyone could ask for. A really great main character who is easy to connect with and besides her a really great side characters who make this story interesting and fun. With all that a quest which seems tough and where you cannot wait to see what happens next.

The only reason why I didn't enjoy this book fully is that there were moments when this story was really predictable and that did bother me. Although, at moments this story seemed for younger readers and it probably is meant for them so I understood that and I could enjoy it. The other thing that I wish I had seen here was the map of this world. I know that it is not possible to have it with small publishers or self publishing, but hopefully one day when this book gets published by some serious publisher (and it certainly deserves it) I hope to see one.

But all in all, even though younger readers will probably enjoy this book more, still my young heart was able to connect with it and fully enjoy it.

Rating: 4 stars.

Bookish Problems #18 - Do we have to love every book?

Hiya. So it seems like both Glass and I get inspired for these Bookish Problems as we really get to prepare one for each week. But needless to say we love all the discussions and comments coming from you! It's really great to see how different we are sometimes.

Back on today's topic. I was reading a book recently and well half way through I just stopped and wondered should I feel something? Should I connect with the characters? Should I this, or should I that!

So the answer is I SHOULD NOT or at least not always. While being a reader you have to understand that not every book is for you and that you won't enjoy every book. And while sometimes you might be the guilty one, it doesn't always have to be you. Sometimes just the main character is not speaking to you or sometimes you just cannot get into the story and simply that book is not something you can enjoy reading. It happens and life goes on.

I have always said that angels are my favorite paranormal creatures and they are, but let me tell you something - a big number of books about angels made me scream (in a bad way). Those were the books that I could particularly swear I'd enjoy. People enjoyed them and it's angels, people angels! But niet!

Alas, what you SHOULD do is respect other people's opinion. Maybe it's that they loved it and you did not. Great! Be happy for them. Maybe you loved it, but for them there was no communication between them and the book. It's life!

Cherish with other readers all happy moments and sympathies with them all the bad ones.

So a penny for your thoughts! Do you love some books that others don't or vice versa? SHARE! We love to hear from you!

Kisses,

(Blog Tour + Givaway) Breeder by K.B. Hoyle

Author's:
Publication date: December 11th 2014, The Writer's Coffee Shop

My rating: 5 stars

Book summary:

"Everything about Seventeen’s life is perfect, from her genetics, to her home in Sanctuary, to her status as a Breeder in the Unified World Order. But all that changes when she meets a rogue Enforcer named Pax, who infiltrates Sanctuary and targets her for extraction from the Controlled Repopulation Program. Pax seems to know a little too much about her, and he plants dangerous doubts in her mind that accuse Sanctuary of hiding a dark secret, and that cause Seventeen to question everything she’s ever known.
When Seventeen’s life is threatened, she has little choice but to run away from Sanctuary with Pax. But for Breeders, contact with men is forbidden by law, and even the simple act of taking Pax’s hand is treason.
Mired in confusion, Seventeen travels with Pax to the outside world and takes the name Pria, the identity of her childhood. But she is far from certain she’s made the right decision when they discover an entire community of people who should no longer exist.
Seventeen, now Pria, is thrust into a position as a key player in a dangerous bid to bring down the Unified World Order. Meanwhile, Pax’s attachment to her and her growing attraction to him contribute to the ever-growing mysteries in her life.
Pria’s journey from a sheltered, naïve Breeder to a rebel agent requires not only external transformation but self-discovery. As her world crumbles, Pria must decide who she is and what she really believes.
But the truth comes at a cost, and uncovering it will require a greater treason than she could ever have imagined."

If you are familiar with the work of K.B. Hoyle, you probably know that she has a way with words - The Getaway Chronicles was a compelling story about a girl and her friends who find out about hidden world for which they believed existed only in fairy tales. It was perfect series for younger and older readers. Today, she is giving us completely new story- Breeder is a first novel in new The Breeder Cycle series.

Why should you read this book?

  • Intriguing idea. I've noticed that several readers compared this book with the TV show Dollhouse. I haven't watched it yet, but Breeder reminded me of one other show - The Lottery. Controlled reproduction and playing with human genome after the world wide disaster. At least, Breeder started like that. I was scared in which direction storyline would go because it was kind of too familiar, but I shouldn't have doubted. What happened next left me with my mouth open and at loss of words. And that twist in the end? Oh my God, wait until you read that!
  • Strong characters. Both Pria and Pax will get your attention from the very first page. It is hard to find unique characters in dystopian (or any other) genre, but these two come close to that. Only thing two of them want is to find a place where they can be themselves and not what is expected of them to be, but to accomplish that goal, there is much harder task before Pria and Pax. Especially Pria. I liked how quickly she managed to fit in to the outside world and still not change completely. Also, if you're afraid that there will be a romance to ruin it all - don't be. Love is not the main focus of this book.
  • Action-packed. You will bite your nails and pull your hair. Breeder is quick and fun read that will keep you on your toes until the very end and then make you demand the sequel as soon as possible.
  • It will make you think... about some of your own views as well as things our society teaches us. What we accept as "normal" and many other things we take for granted.

Final judgement? New K.B. Hoyle novel is a perfect choice for fans of dystopian novels, even for those who think how there can't possibly be any new premise when it comes to this genre. Breeder will surprise you.

Praise for Breeder
"Breeder was anything but a let down. The characters were extremely well written, making me able to empathize with Pria and Pax and the situation they find themselves in. I kept turning the pages because I just had to find out what happened to these people and, to my shock, finished the book in a day! "  - Angela  Goodreads Review

Waiting On Wednesday (#125)

You know the story. This is a meme created by Breaking the Spine and every week we pick books we're waiting for. Here are our picks for this week.

Glass can't wait to read...

***The powerful continuation of the story that began in Reclaiming the Sand- a tale of love and forgiveness and learning to move on from a past that has come to define you.***

Bully and Victim

Friend and Lover
Past and Future

Ellie McCallum and Flynn Hendrick’s story was as painful as it was devastating. But they were able to find within each other an unlikely yet beautiful love. Despite the obstacles that tried to keep them apart.

And together they rose out of the ashes of their tragic history.
Now years after their life changing reunion Ellie is back in Wellston, having just graduated from college and ready to start her future with the man who taught her how to love. However, returning to a town that held so much bitterness and anger was the last place she wanted to start over.
But for Flynn, who is now an art professor at the community college and firmly rooted in the place that gave them their beginning, she’d do just about anything.
Yet it’s difficult building a life when you’ve only just learned how to live.
And love, no matter how strong, doesn’t always conquer all.

Ellie and Flynn must learn how far they are willing to go to stay together. Or whether the ghosts of the past will consume them both.
Because finding a happily ever after is harder than it seems. Particularly when you’re fighting against the one thing that could destroy you.
Yourself.

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

Buy the book at
Author's

Book summary:

Four mothers, four daughters, four families whose histories shift with the four winds depending on who's "saying" the stories. In 1949 four Chinese women, recent immigrants to San Francisco, begin meeting to eat dim sum, play mahjong, and talk. United in shared unspeakable loss and hope, they call themselves the Joy Luck Club. Rather than sink into tragedy, they choose to gather to raise their spirits and money. "To despair was to wish back for something already lost. Or to prolong what was already unbearable." Forty years later the stories and history continue.
With wit and sensitivity, Amy Tan examines the sometimes painful, often tender, and always deep connection between mothers and daughters. As each woman reveals her secrets, trying to unravel the truth about her life, the strings become more tangled, more entwined. Mothers boast or despair over daughters, and daughters roll their eyes even as they feel the inextricable tightening of their matriarchal ties. Tan is an astute storyteller, enticing readers to immerse themselves into these lives of complexity and mystery.

If you have scrolled to the bottom and found out that this review is done by me, well. don't be surprised. In the light of recent events when I've been drowning in assignments one of them surfaced as something more than just obligation and something that I must do. It turned into something that I enjoyed doing. Yup, you're guessing. The Joy Luck Club was assignment for me but now I don't think I see it as just that.

One of the things that was the most appealing to me while dealing with postmodernism was the diversity in it. Recently I have hear a lot of bloggers speaking as we don't get enough diversity in YA and it's a fact, we don't. But The Joy Luck Club is perfect example of how to embody that diversity into somewhat known environment. This is a story about four mothers who all came to USA from China and about their daughters who are cough in between cultures, age and continents. With that their struggle to do what we all tend to do - fit in. But some boundaries are hard to overcome and it's shown here how in attempt to become something else you lose yourself.

What fascinated me the most here is how realistic every image was. What's most both Chinese and American culture are equality far away from me, still I could connect with book (I still strongly believe that mother was Chinese in her past life, as the silent treatment from the book reminded me of her and my rebellious moments). Speaking of words it's magical how this book successfully combines folk tales with real life. Another thing that fascinated me is that this book is one of the best examples of "show, don't tell rule". A lot of it is told here, but the number of things that are shown is much greater.

In order to persuade you to read it, I'll tell you that this book consist of stories and each of them can function on its own, but it also is just one puzzle of the whole story. Still you can read one story at the time and learn from each something new. Finally, when you get to the end you will have the whole picture with all the details. Still if you don't have time for all of them, one is enough to make you wonder.

Excerpt

(From Noah’s POV)
“Did you fall into some paint, Echo?” Isaiah asks, changing the subject.
Echo’s shoulder slumps as she pivots toward the mirror. She groans as she touches her cheek and forehead that are more red and pink than skin. “Dang it. Why am I such a mess?”
“I think it’s sexy as hell,” I say.
“I think I’m going to barf,” Beth mocks my tone.
Death radiates from the look I send her way. Enough that it should melt her. “Ever sleep in a tent, Beth?”
Beth focuses on the screen while raising her middle finger in my direction.
“Screw it.” Echo turns away from the mirror. “I need a shower.”
I smile, Echo blushes, then I laugh. Damn me for inviting Isaiah and Beth to share our room.
“Anyhow.” An excited glint strikes Echo’s eyes. “Are you ready? I hope you like it. It’s sort of…for you. But it’s not done, okay? I mean, something like this would actually take a while to perfect, so I guess I’m saying—”
“Echo.”
“Yeah?”
“It’s all good.”
“Okay.” Her fingers drum nervously over the top of the canvas before she repeats, “Okay.”
“I’m assuming that’s not the constellation Aires?”
“No. I’ll have to start on that tomorrow.” With a deep inhale, Echo pulls out a chair from the table and rests the painting on the arms and leans it against the back so it will stay upright.
Air rushes out of my body, and I sink onto our bed. It’s the same damned shock as when she drew my parents this past spring. There’s awe and joy and this ache that hits deep in my gut. I bend forward and rest my joint hands on my knees and stare at the sight in front of me.
Fuck me, my eyes burn. I shut them, attempting to get my shit together. It’s a painting. Only a painting. I reopen them, and it’s the same disorientation as a right hook to the head. It’s more than a painting, and that’s the reason my throat swells.
Last night meant as much to me as it did to her and she painted it, capturing it in a way unique to Echo. She’s right, it’s not done. It’s a skeleton compared to her other work, but I see enough to know what she desires, what she plans to design. Up close all those colors would look like chaos, but when viewed as a whole it creates this beautiful picture. In the end, that’s the best way to describe me and Echo, our relationship. Our love.
The bed dips as Echo eases onto it, settles behind me and props her chin on my shoulder. Her signature scent that reminds me of walking into a bakery becomes an invisible blanket surrounding me. “What do you think?”
“It’s us,” I whisper, and knots form in my stomach. Echo always finds a way to blow my mind. She tenses behind me and I continue, “It’s where we spent last night.”
“It is.” Echo relaxes, and her fingers curl around my biceps. “Do you like it?”
Struggling for composure, I place my hand over hers and pause. “It’s…”
I’m not Echo. I don’t have words for what happens inside me. If I did, I’d fail at describing this. I shift to rest my forehead against hers. “I don’t deserve you.”
“That’s my statement,” she says so only I can hear. “I wish we were alone again.”
I press my lips to hers, slide my hand through her hair and watch as the curls bounce back into place. “Me, too.”

The Law of Moses by Amy Harmon

Buy the book:
Author's:

My rating: 5 stars

Book summary:

"If I tell you right up front, right in the beginning that I lost him, it will be easier for you to bear. You will know it’s coming, and it will hurt. But you’ll be able to prepare.

Someone found him in a laundry basket at the Quick Wash, wrapped in a towel, a few hours old and close to death. They called him Baby Moses when they shared his story on the ten o’clock news – the little baby left in a basket at a dingy Laundromat, born to a crack addict and expected to have all sorts of problems. I imagined the crack baby, Moses, having a giant crack that ran down his body, like he’d been broken at birth. I knew that wasn’t what the term meant, but the image stuck in my mind. Maybe the fact that he was broken drew me to him from the start.

It all happened before I was born, and by the time I met Moses and my mom told me all about him, the story was old news and nobody wanted anything to do with him. People love babies, even sick babies. Even crack babies. But babies grow up to be kids, and kids grow up to be teenagers. Nobody wants a messed up teenager.

And Moses was messed up. Moses was a law unto himself. But he was also strange and exotic and beautiful. To be with him would change my life in ways I could never have imagined. Maybe I should have stayed away. Maybe I should have listened. My mother warned me. Even Moses warned me. But I didn’t stay away.

And so begins a story of pain and promise, of heartache and healing, of life and death. A story of before and after, of new beginnings and never-endings. But most of all...a love story.

If you are fan of new adult novels, there is no way that you haven't heard about Amy Harmon. The most popular book she wrote is probably Making Faces, a story about group of friends, war and loss. I still haven't read that one, and truth to be told, I had a lot of doubts first time I noticed it on Goodreads. Back then, a lot of my friends read and raved about certain books, I got interested and picked up the book. In the end, I was left wondering is it me, them or the book - because I couldn't find any of those things they had loved so much. That is the main reason why I still haven't read Making Faces, but when I saw this beautiful cover for The Law of Moses and read synopsis, I was intrigued. Now, I can only say that I'm happy for reading it.

The Law of Moses Five Greats:

  • Emotional and beautiful story. This is one of those books you will read with your heart, soul, mind and body, that will leave you drained and full at the same time. You will try to read it slowly because you'll want to make it last just a little bit longer. Your heart will hurt, your body will tingle, your lips will curl into a lazy smile and open in a sigh. Maybe your eyes will roll few times, but nothing you won't be able to get over. You'll want to slap some of the characters and in the next moment drag your fingers over someone's  skin and feel them shiver. You will feel so many things.
  • Moses and Georgia. If I ever wanted to scream "I ship them!" it would be while I read The Law of Moses. And I absolutely hate "shipping". Amy Harmon leaves you with no other choice than to get involved with the lives of her characters. In those few hours you become them - that's how powerful her writing is.
  • Colors and lines. I know that this doesn't make much sense, but you will know what I meant when you read the book.
  • Thought-provoking. Yes, there is drama and angst and even few cliches of the genre, but also The Law of Moses is a book that makes you think and question your beliefs. Amy Harmon does write more religious centered stores, but if you do not prefer topics like that, I assure, this is not one of those books that tries to convince you to become Catholic (or Jewish or Muslim). I do not like books with religious aspect and I adored this book. (On the other hand, Running Barefoot is a completely different matter.)
  • Unexpected twist. There is this... lets say thing to avoid spoilers, that I have not expected and I'm grateful that I haven't read any reviews or comments that could have made me enjoy reading The Law of Moses less.

Final judgement? Beautiful and heartbreaking story that you will wish to read all over again, recommended even for those who are not fans of new adult.

If you think this review was helpful, please, consider liking it on Goodreads.
Happy reading,

Bookish Problems #17 - Reading Schedule: Yes or No?

One of the problems all book bloggers are familiar with is scheduling their upcoming reads. This is something we are forced to do if we want to finish reading all our review copies on time and still find time to read something else.

We have already talked about this topic with some of you lovely ladies, and we know that most of bloggers are doing this. But here is what I want to ask you today:

Do you ever feel like reading has become more like a job or school assignment? Does this make you enjoy it less sometimes?

My answer is yes. I am not kind of person who loves too much pressure or boundaries. Even as a teacher I tend to change my lesson plans dozen times during the school year as soon as I feel that I have started to repeat same routines. It gets boring and uninspiring - for kids and myself. I act same way when it comes to reading. I do mark down all important dates, I keep track of publication dates, all new books (but old ones as well) that I can't wait to read and I try to come up with some sort of reading schedule. But as soon as I start to feel as if planner that is always somewhere near me, has started to rule my life, I give up on any form of scheduling. I just pick up what appeals to me in that moment.

What is your solution for this?

Maybe Not (Maybe Someday, #1.5) by Colleen Hoover

My rating: 5 stars

Book summary:

"When Warren has the opportunity to live with a female roommate, he instantly agrees. It could be an exciting change.

Or maybe not.

Especially when that roommate is the cold and seemingly calculating Bridgette. Tensions run high and tempers flare as the two can hardly stand to be in the same room together. But Warren has a theory about Bridgette: anyone who can hate with that much passion should also have the capability to love with that much passion. And he wants to be the one to test this theory.

Will Bridgette find it in herself to warm her heart to Warren and finally learn to love?

Maybe.

Maybe not."

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23587984-maybe-not

Read my review for Maybe Someday here.

First I have to say that I am not usually fan of novellas - almost every single one I've read so far was only there to fill time between book one and book two, or to remind people to buy "original" book. They don't bring anything new or fairly important, I end up cursing myself for even picking them up. This did not happen with this release.

Maybe Not is a story about Warren and Bridgette, secondary characters from Maybe Someday. The odd couple. The crazy ones who made us laugh. I am so happy that Colleen Hoover decided to surprise us with their story no matter how short it is. I do wish there were more pages, but this was okay too. Better something than nothing, right?

"I don't want you to change Bridgette. I'm not in love with who you could be, or who you used to be, or who the world thinks you should be. I'm in love with you. Right now. Just like this."

All the reasons to read Maybe Not

  • That quote above. If you want more, just read it. I highlighted whole thing in the end.
  • Quick, but satisfying read. Unlike many others novellas, you do not feel as if anything is rushed. This is not continuation of the previous novel trough the perspective of other characters. Timeline is the same like in Maybe Someday, but focus of the story is on completely different events. There are couple of scenes you will recognize, but still it is like you are reading them for the first time.
  • Warren. Oh my God, Warren! Tanja can we squeeze him into your harem somehow? Do not worry, I will take care of him.
  • Hotness overload. But seriously! Colleen Hoover, I didn't know you had it in you. You should definitely write steamier scenes more often. I know that some of you (still) aren't comfortable with reading explicit scenes, so consider this as a warning - Maybe Not is most definitely 18+ read.
  • I walked on the clouds all day. Every once in a while we all need one of those "feel good", happy and fluffy reads.

In the end, other than trying to make you read this, I will share just one more quote with you. If this doesn't work out, than you have cold, cold hart.

"I press my lips to hers with such delicacy; I want her to feel everything she's ever deserved to feel at the hands of someone else. She deserves to feel beautiful. She deserves to feel important. She deserves to feel cared for. She deserves to feel respected. She deserves to feel like there's at least one other person in this world who accepts her for exactly who she is.
She deserves to know how I feel. because I feel all of those things. And maybe a little more."

Happy reading,
